Question 1st Birthday Cake?

Mikael's birthday is in 3 weeks, and I am FREAKING OUT! I haven't done ANYTHING for him... its been soooo crazy around here--other birthdays, jobs, going away parties, reunions, finding a new daycare...I dont have time to sleep let alone plan a huge party. Plus we are financially strapped so the big birthday I dreamed of---out the window. Now its just going to be family and a coupld of my best friends.
Mikael has not displayed any food allergies--we feed him what we eat (within reason, obviously, no chili or bacon or any of that) but he has had a few bites of yellow cake with no frosting. He eats stuff with sugar-- nilla wafers (I get to thank his p.o.s. daycare for that one...) so I am not worried about that. He has had pancakes and waffles before, which I am sure have had egg whites in it. I steer way clear of anything fish, chocolate, strawberry, or nuts.
Any ideas for a 1st bday cake? i don't want to make a carrot cake... we are doing two cakes for sure one small one for him and one for the family. Would it harm him to do a simple yellow cake with a frosting? Or maybe a pumpkin cake with cream cheese frosting? I see all these articles that its bad and you should really only do carrot cake, etc.
Also I think I want to do a zoo theme for his birthday party.
I would love more suggestions if any of you ladies have them! I know I posted a post similar to this and those ideas were great. Just wondering if anyone else has any Thanks so much in advance ladies!!!

Nope it wouldn't. You're not going to feed him this EVERY day and this is a BIG deal! Kenzie doesn't get junk at all- I plan on keeping it that way. But she will DEF get to tear into her 1st birthday cake. It is sort of a rite of passage IMO!

my sister made my daughters first birthday cake....I didn't even think about flavor...I found out when we cut into it that it was chocolate and she ate it anyway and was fine. My sister had 3 kids that survived just fine with chocolate cake for their first cake. I donno. I would go with what you know he's okay with. I wouldn't worry about carrot cake cause it is just one day it it's a special day.

we had chocolate (that's the one Gabby ate) plus a purple yam cake, it's a filipino cake that MIL insisted on getting (she paid for them both so it was upto her) we also had an ice-cream cake... i'm with Lisa, it's a rite of passage so let them eat cake

I tend not to follow medical yes and no guidelines where food is concerned, if they like it and they don't explode after eating it, then it's fine. You could buy little fairy cakes in various flavours and see if he gets a reaction for any of them, if they are fine he can one of those flavours for a cake.

Mikael wants chocolate cake. He told me telpathically.

Try giving him a square off a hershey's bar. Not only will he LOVE you for it, but its a great way to test ahead of time for an allergy.

A zoo theme sounds lovely! Good luck in your planning....my baby girl's second birthday party is this month.

Agreed with everyone else-- it doesn't make you a bad mommy for giving your child chocolate cake or any other flavor other than carrot on his first b-day! Maybe I'm a little bit more relaxed than a lot of other moms, but we had given Alex a taste of different flavors before she was even one! (Chocolate pudding, which was actually recommeded in a BabyCenter email for a snack with calcium, frosting, etc.) Also, there really is no need to avoid things like strawberries. Tons of toddler foods have natural strawberry in them, like the Gerber Fruit Strips and Yogurt Melts, etc. I hope you don't feel like you're being a bad mommy if you feed him things with chocolate or strawberry in them! Good luck with the planning! The zoo theme sounds great! Take tons of pictures and post your favorite ones-- especially ones of the cake! LoL!

Yes, we love birthday cakes! The discussion regarding Alyssa's cake this year...
Mom: So what kind of cake are you getting her.
Me: Well I don't know. I was going to go to the store and find some decorations I like.
Mom: You're not buying her a cake at the bakery?
Me: Ummm, no. I can save money by making it, and have fun in the process!
Mom: Oh no way. I always bought you kids a cake at the bakery with a theme. She HAS to have one.
Me: Are you buying it?

Gotta love the little stresses that arise even before the child can ask for a themed party!

I've never heard of babies not being able to have pork or strawberries.

I personally prefer home made cake to bakery cakes, even if they are just from a box of Betty Crocker cake mix. They taste better. The only bakery cake I ever loved was wedding cake .
