Default 3rd Foods

When, on average, are babies supposed to start eating 3rd foods (or any foods with chunkier textures)? My baby is getting much better at the chewing motion, but I'm not sure what other kinds of milestones he's supposed to have reached before moving on to the chunkier stuff....
