Default 6-year-old with possible social disorder

I am so confused (and frustrated) with my 6-year-old son's social behavior. One minute he is extremely shy and clingy, the next he is perfectly fine and socializing with everyone. The main example of this is when we take him to school or daycare. A lot of times he won't go into the classroom. He stands in the hallway clinging to us and whining that he doesn't want to go in. In the meantime, other children and his teachers say hi to him and try to talk to him, but he won't say a word back, not even hi. We usually end up having to carry him into his classroom and pull him off us. I could understand this behavior maybe if it were like the first day of school or a new school or something, but these are kids and teachers he knows. We've talked to his teachers about this problem and they all say that he usually warms up within 10 minutes or so and is talking to and running around and playing with the other kids. I don't get it!! Has anyone else gone through this? My husband and I could really use some advice. Thanks

Have you pursued an ASD diagnosis at all? Does he have other social problems or is this just the prime example? Also, are you and dh spending enough time with him? And are you sure there are no signs of someone at school or daycare that he doesn't like or is afraid of?

Welcome to the board!

Maybe he is a shy child and does not take transition well.

Could you arrange that he walk into school w/ a friend of his? That way you would not have the scene of having to pick him up and bring him into class.

As an adult, I am very social and outgoing. I had the same issues as a kindergartener. I had that transition issue. Yes, I was a shy child, a big family, and it always seemed the entire neighborhood was playing at our home.
