Default A question in case it ever happens again

In my last trip, I turned in a CRT for a free Tylenol Go Tabs, along with several other coupons, both manufacturer, CVS CRT, and EB. My total was about $2, so I didn't even look at my receipt until I got home, and then noticed that the Go Tabs CRT must not have scanned at all because I didn't get credit for it. I really didn't need them and was just getting them because they were free. That CVS is further away, and I really don't like shopping there because of some of the cashiers working there and often many of the sale items are not even stocked. So I went to my favorite CVS with my receipt and the Tylenol, and was told all that could be done to get my money back was to return the Tylenol. So I did, but I felt a little cheated because I lost the use of the free coupon. This was only a small amount ($2.50) but I was wondering if something like this happened with a larger amount, do we have any recourse? If they keep the CRT you have no proof that you had one. Has anything like this happened to anyone and what did you do? TIA
