Unhappy Abnormal quad screen

OK, so it took over a week to get my bloodwork back. I supposedly have an increased risk of my baby having Down's syondrome. Of course, they did warn me that the test has a pretty good chance of being a false positive. Needless to say, DH and I have a perinatal consult and genetic counseling on Monday. They're also asking if we want to have an amnio to get more answers. My sister had the same exact thing happen with her second pregnancy, and everything came back fine. My mom and DH want me to have the amnio. I'll decide Monday after talking to the doctor/nurse.

Question will you keep the bub regardless of the result, if so is it worth the risk of miscarriage to find out, I know a heads up would be nice but......

I was going to ask the same question. I know it isnt a question that you want to have to consider but honestly my sister was told that her baby would have downs he was born premature they said he had downs her and her DH went to all these classes and three months later the DRs said he didnt have downs he is now three and no downs. I personally dont even want the test done because i will be keeping my child regardless and i wouldnt risk loosing the baby i tried so hard for. Ultimatly it is up to you and your DH no one can make the decision for you but there are sooo many false positives i would wait it out but if it is something that you need then you should do what you feel is best for you and your family. I pray that it is a false positive and that everything is ok with you and your baby

I agree with the pp. It is your decision ultimately whether or not the knowing you have a greater "chance" of having a downs baby would affect whether you kept it or not. I think every child is a gift and I have known some of the most beautiful people in the world who have Downs so for me it would not be a reason to end a baby's life. I don't know that I would risk the amnio unless the dr thought it was an absolutely necessary procedure. Hope you make the best decision for you and your family. Hugs!

I now refuse to have the screening test done. I didn't do it with dd#3 or with the twins. It has an 80% chance of being a false positive with regards to down syndrome. That's pretty darn high. Not to mention the fact that you can accurately (up to 95%) determine whether or not your baby has downs via ultra sound. (They didn't tell you that did they?) Why stick a large needle in your belly if you can get an ultra sound that will give you the same information? For us, the statistical chance of having a miscarriage w/amnio was actually higher than the statistical chance of us having a baby with down syndrome. Unless your over 35. . .your stats are probably very similar.

I was told that both of my first two babies were going to have downs. Not only are they perfectly healthy and normal but they are both gifted. Ultimately it is your decision. . .I know for us we would never even contemplate terminating a pregnancy. In my humble opinion it is not worth knowing either. I don't think you can prepare for a down syndrome baby anymore than you can really prepare for labor or even having twins! You can read books, you can practice and contemplate certain scenarios but ultimately you have no idea how things will go. Good luck to you and keep us posted.

I chose not to have testing for this exact reason. The WORRY! All this stress could be for nothing. I agree also with PP. I wouldn't chance an amnio if you plan to keep bbs anyway (which, personally I would keep the baby). I have heard of more amnios going wrong than quad tests being accurate. Good luck on your decision. I hope everything is fine.

We're meeting with the perinatologist tomorrow. DH wants me to have the amnio for peace of mind. I already had a level 2 u/s scheduled with this doctor for next week, so I want to see if we can wait until after the u/s to really decide. I'm really skeptical about the results of the quad screen. I'm curious to see what the doctor says. I hate doing this but I'll play the nurse card so he can't try to sugar coat anything. I'll keep you posted.
