Default Alcohol and boating -- what are the laws in your neck of the woods?

Recently we went out boating in the Seattle area. We each had a beer and I left my can in the holder. We were stopped by the King County sheriff deputies and the driver was given a series of "drunk" tests. I think they didn't really have a good excuse for stopping us, they just wanted the word to get out that drinking and boating rules are similar to drinking and driving rules.

Good for them!

Seriously, I had a friend in high school who was killed due to an alcohol related boat incident.

Alcohol rules are the same for boats as for cars here. That's fair enough too as you are responsible for the wellbeing of everyone who is on the boat and if you are drunk, then you should be reated just the same as if you are driving a car.

I think that boats and cars are treated the same here as well. My favorite thing to do in college was go to my roomates lake hours and paddle boat and drink. I equate that to drinking and bicycling

Default safety first

I think safety comes before fun. We have so much water in WA it's hard to stay away. Many of our holidays involve getting in -- at SeaFair, for some a drunken brawl, everyone goes out on their boats to watch the hydroplane races.
