Exclamation Alert: Pet Food Recall Continues to Expand

Hey all!

I wasn't aware of this until late last week that new items have been, and continue to be, added to the recall list due to worries of cross-contamination. (Some foods that didn't contain the protein concentrate that was the source of the problem were still processed on equipment that had come in contact with it. Therefore, to be safe, other foods have been pulled.)

Latest addtion was May 7, 2007: Drs. Foster and Smith Dry Dog Food.

To check if the food you feed your cat or dog is on there, check the ASPCA's Pet Food Recall List.

Did you know that they're feeding the recalled pet food to pigs that are to be used for human consumption? At first they were segregating those pigs, but now they're saying that they should be safe for human consumption. wth?

I had heard that too! I forget if I was watching NBC Nightly News (or ABC's or CBS's version) but I don't understand how pigs can eat it and not get sick, and then we're potentially eating them and not being affected. That just doesn't sound right at all. I think I'm off pork for a while now...

I wouldn't be surprised if they didn't process it somehow & feed it to cows either.

I thought of you this morning, MissyChrissy, when my husband turned on CNBC or CNN or one of those morning cable news programs and guess what they were talking about? The contaminated pet food that had been fed to pigs AND, you were right, cows and chickens!!!!

They were expressing concerns about the safety of our food (human and pet) and how it's more dangerous now than ever because the FDA is stretched too thin to do the job they need to do. And how there probably will be reports of people getting sick and more recalls for people food too. Maybe not directly from this pet food thing (although it is a possibility), but they fully expect more problems like they had with that spinach recall.

UGH!

The FDA is a joke anymore. I tell ya, I'm honestly considering buying a vacant farm near my house & raising our own food. My husband grew up on a farm, so it's not really a stretch to think maybe we will some day.

The FDA won't do anything until people get sick and/or die.

Yikes! I hope this doesn't get put into the baby food that contains meat products.

I know this isn't quite "pets" related, but it is related to the topic we've been discussing about the recalled pet food and the wheat gluten that came from China. My friend sent me a NY Times article about a dangerous ingredient in toothpaste...that was made in China, or some part of the supply chain came from China.

So it's not just in our food we have to worry about recalls now!!!! And it makes me worry about other stuff we give our pets...treats, bones, chewies, etc...that might also contain stuff we're not entirely informed about where it comes from.

Best to be mindful of all things we use, I guess.

And people think globalization is a good thing? ONLY if you're on their butts, MAKING them make things up to our standards-standards it took us years and years to establish and enforce. And if we're putting in all the man-power to babysit them, we may as well still manufacture our own stuff right here.....

only, people don't want to pay for a tv that was built by everyone making $10/hour. That would cost the consumer too much.

I'm looking at a farm for my dh. I want him to raise all our own meat. I can use baking soda & water for tooth paste...with peroxide for mouthwash. We're going to be going back 50 years at the rate things are going...it's the only "safe" thing to do.
