Always sick
Dh actually wanted me to post this. Ds has been on and off sick since October. He has had numerous colds and 3 ear infections already. He is also on a nebulizer.
The doctor said babies will get colds every 3 weeks, and every other will have an ear infection with it. Has anyone else heard of this?
Is there anything I can do for him to avoid him always being sick?

Emma has had 4 colds in her lifetime, and she's almost 25 months. It all depends on the child... The whole "sick every month/three weeks" theory being a general rule is a crock, I think. The only kids I've known getting sick that often are kids that are around kids on a regular basis (daycare, siblings, play dates, etc.). Try giving him diluted V8 VFusion. I swear by that stuff! Emma's had two ear infections as well, and neither were with a cold. She's had a nebulizer since she was 10 weeks (that was the first time she got sick). I think most kids end up with nebulizers, to be honest. I don't know of any kid that hasn't had to use one at one point. Just start him up on vitamins or pediasure to help boost his immune system, too, but Emma's had V8 VFusion for a very long time, and it's really helped!

I'm with Andrea that the whole "always sick" thing isn't accurate. My son has had 3 or 4 colds and he's 31 months. He hasn't had an ear infection, either. Maybe he has allergies which is why he always seems sick?? I don't know--just a thought.
I don't know what to tell you but here are massive I hope your little man feels better.

Last year Nevy got sick 2 times and this year she has had like 4 or 5 colds. This year is supposed to be one of the worst cold/flu season in a long time. Nevy's Dr.'s office has been seeing a lot of RSV and pneumonia the nurse said. I can only imagine how many colds she would have got this year if it wasn't for the fact that we got flu shots.
Not only does it depend on the child but if its a bad cold season then he's going to end up getting something. I would just try to avoid sick people and make sure you wash his hands often. Also if his system is already low from fighting a cold it makes it easier to catch another one. He needs a few weeks after a cold to build up his resistance again.

Libby has had one cold and she's nearly 2 and a half. She has sibings who attend 3 different schools and who bring different friends home. I think your doctor is talking rubbish. Have they investigated the ear infections?

i would ask for another opinion. izzy has had 2 colds, but i figure it's a combo of dh & i having a good immune system, her being bf for a year and the only "kids" she's around are about 20 high-schoolers once a week.
however, one cold every 3 weeks? are you kidding me? i would be doing some serious testing if that was the case! (and i will put off any and all tests for even the silliest reasons) i know after so many ear infections, most doctors want to put in tubes, especially if they were on average every 6 weeks. that theory just has so many things wrong with it, i'm not really sure how to organize my thoughts on it.

Nay--I think your doctor is right on target for a baby that is not breastfed and is in daycare. Doesn't mean it happens for every single baby. . .but it certainly isn't out of the range of "normal."

It depends on the child, Jamie has a lot of colds, it is actually a bit weird for him not to have a cold to be honest, Pippa has had two colds so far. Now Mikey is at school because his body is around pathogens he hasn't met before as he has never been to a child minder or nursery, instead of his body getting rid straight away he gets a cold.
With the infections, it is probably more likely that the infection isn't being fully cleared up, so once the antibiotics are gone the bacteria number increases again until it starts causing a problem.

The doctor also said that his ear infections can sometimes be attributed to his acid reflux. That when the acid rises that it irratates(sp) his ears which can cause an infection.
He is also a daycare baby, and I didn't breast feed so that can also be factors as to why he is always sick.
Jen, he did have 1/2 a dose of the flu shot this year. NJ requires child in daycares to have the flu shot. He was only able to get a 1/2 a dose because that is all they had left. Infants have to get 2 shots because their bodies can't handle the entire dose at 1 time.
I can't wait for spring!!
