Annual Review at work....TODAY!!!!
Ugh, I have my first ever annual review today. I'm kinda nervous about it, being that I havenever had one, and that I don't know what to say in it. I know I get to ask for a payrise, but I don't know how much I should ask for... whats ridiculous and whats pointless. And I just want to get it over with, it should have been this morning but it's been postponed... nevermind.
To those of you who have had one, are they like parent-teacher-student interviews, without the parents being there... and also the fact you can negotiate things??
Thanks for listening

I've had good reviews, and bad ones - it depends who is doing it. If it's your boss, and you normally get on with them, then it's not too much of a problem.
I remember one time I hated a job I'd just started, they pulled me in for a review and said 'The agency really recommended you, but your heart doesn't seem in the job, what's wrong' - I explained I wasn't doing what I'd expected the job would be, and that I was trying my best, but really wasn't happy. They asked me what I'd thought the job was, and then moved me to another department that better matched my skills and interests - you can't get much better than that!
I hope yours went well. Talking about money isn't easy with your boss is it? If you've been there a while, was it in your contract you could expect a raise of X amount each year? Even if it wasn't, have you done well lately? Have your responsibilities changed at all? Just think about the job and i'm sure you can come up with a strong argument!

Etali- Thanks for the reply. It went well, they offered me 4% to start with but I got 5.5%. I may have gotten more because it still isnt as much as I'd like to be earning, but, what you want and what you get in life are two completely different things. I don't exactly have a contract as such, but I did sign an accept and sign the offer of employment, which leaves my employers with the option of keeping me or letting me go if they arent happy with my work. But they are happy with my work, which makes me happy! And I enjoy working here too. Im just glad its over now.

Congratulations! Glad it went well.
I'm not sure what the cost of living increases have been over the past year, but if you got more than a 'cost of living' raise you're a winner in my opinion Especially if you enjoy your job. Hope it stays that way in the future.

5.5% is decent. From what I've heard from other friends, a 3% raise is a standard raise and anything above that is a performance related boost.

Thanks everyone, apparently inflation is at 4% in Aus, so that's why they offered that, but yeah I am getting happier about it all now.
