I have not had it in any of my pregnancies but I have two friends who have dealt with this. You will be seeing the doctors lots and lots during this pregnancy. I assume your baby has it?
I have one friend whose baby was totally fine and another's baby who had to have heart surgery. . .but was eventually fine. I imagine that they are doing or are going to due all manner of tests on you and your baby and so you'll probably have time to prepare if something is wrong. If it helps to know. . .statistically speaking, it's more likely that the baby will be fine. (I think it's like 2/3 of babies born with this are born totally healthy.)
Thank you! at my 16 week u/s they said that everything looked fine other than the cord. However they have not offered any further testing to check anything. I find that a little odd.
Well. . .not really--I don't think. You're too early at that point to have a diagnostic sonogram and you're too early for your AFP which I assume you're going to do? Many of the things they're looking for have to be detected later in pg. . .I imagine that as you go along you'll be seeing more and more of your doctor/sonogram techs/etc. It seems like with my one friend whose baby was totally fine. . .she just did the normal stuff. With my other friend, they detected the heart malformation early. . .and monitored her during pg frequently but there wasn't anything to do for the baby until he was born.
The AFP is a blood test that is done to screen for certain defects, such as Down's and neural tube defects. It has to be done by the 18th week of pregnancy and is usually done between 16 and 18 weeks.
