Question Are my sneakers giving me a a workout???? HELP!

I just recently started training for the Police Department's physical. The advice I was given is-running, running, running and some more running. I had a baby 5 months ago and started excercising vigrously for about 2 months now. I've started going to the nutritionist and have 8 pounds left to get back to my pre-pregnancy weight (which was still overweight!)
I just got brand spanking new sneakers-I have done some reserch and picked the "stability" shoe, Asics Gel Nimbus 9. Since I started using them, I feel like I am getting twice as much workout-in fact when I do a 45 minute cardio class-I am wiped out after 30 minutes!!!!! Same with running. They are extremely comfortable....but what's happening is just strange. Is it because I am overweight??????
Also, I have noticed that my lower legs, my shins and ankles-actually every part of my lower muscles hurt very bad, especially at night once I lay down and try to get back up-I can barely walk!!!! What the heck is going on???
Totally baffling!

Anynone???

If your shins hurt it could be your running shoes. My husband goes to a special running store to get his shoes. They make sure that the shoes he buys are exactly for his feet and running style. They are a bit pricey but worth it. As to you being sore....it very well could be that your body is not used to this. Give it time.

It could also be that you're pushing yourself too hard. Be careful of getting shin splints-they take weeks to recover from and you can't run during that time.

There are many running sites out there, maybe you should join one and learn the do's and don'ts to running. It's a WONDERFUL way to get into shape...but it's also a harsh one and it's very easy to go too far.

Good luck with your goals!!

Yeah, I really think that's what it is. I excercise every day-an intense cardio class plus at least a 1.5 mile run on the treademill and another 1 mile run, on the track....! Then again.....if I don't push myself...I will never get there.
How long does it take for you body to recoup after a pregnancy? I mean, after 5 months has my body healed?

First Congrats on your new bundle of joy. How long your body takes to recover from a pregnancy depends upon how fit you were prior and during the pregnancy. After 5 months, you should be fine to start running again. Right now you are running over 2 miles on different surfaces. Try alternating days on each surface. Treadmill running is easier on the joints for running but takes less energy than track running. On top of that I would recommend really concentratin on your post-workout stretches to help with your muscle fatigue. Hot baths also help tons. If you are suffering from shin splints, there is no way to speed up your recovery unless you back off. On top of your running, try picking off days to do a lighter cardio to allow your muscles to rest and come back stronger. I know, you want to push yourself to pass your fit test, but you have to take your body into account. Another way to increase your spead is to do speed trails once a week. What that basically is do a warm up jog around the track (1-2 laps), then sprint one lap, followed by walking one lap. Time your sprints and each time try to meet or beat that time. First time only do four sets and then work your way up. It really works.

Good luck.
