Default Are you Fat?

Are you FAT?!

Well, are you? Take a moment and ponder that question. What is your answer? Are you fat? Your answer to this question is very important because it directly influences your ability to lose weight.

Why? Because if your answer was "yes" (as about 75% or more answer!) then you have got it all wrong and have to get back to the basics of motivation before moving on and making progress on this journey of weight loss.

Now, let me explain what I mean. If I asked you "is your body fat", then "YES" would be an acceptable answer. However, the question that I asked earlier was "Are YOU fat?". There is a huge difference. Let's call this exercise an out of body experience.

Now, we are going to do a bit of self-discovery and help you to identify WHO you are, which will inturn help you to realize what you would like your body to look like. I have this "self-discovery" survey on my website and tens of thousands of people have taken part in it, it's your turn to do so right now.

Take out a piece of paper and a pen, now write down 10 adjectives that you would use to describe yourself. Go ahead, I'll wait.........print this page out if it helps to get the exercise done right now.

Ok. Now, read over your list....what kind of words did you choose to describe yourself. If you are anything like the thousands of other people who have taken part in my exercise, your lists most likely contains some negative or self-depricating words. Words such as "fat, obese, ugly, lumpy, gross, matronly, fat..." are all too common. In fact, one women once wrote "fat" 10 times on her form.

If any self-depricating or negative words are on your list, you must scratch them off and think of more postive words that better describe YOU.....who you are.....not what the current condition of your body is.

I did not ask you to give me a physcial description of what you look like but rather I asked for 10 words that you would use to describe yourself.

Why is this important and what is the difference? Well, you are so much more than thighs or a rear end. If you think of your self in terms of what you look like, you are missing out on the big picture of what really counts...and you are setting yourself up for "dieting" failure.

Why? Because if all you are focusing on is the negative or the 'problem' then you are going to have a very difficult time seeing the solution or the positive reasons to change your life. If all you are is "fat", then why change....but if you can begin to focus on the fact that you are "kind, generous, giving, thoughtful, spiritual, honorable, moral, loving, funny, talented, talkative, etc".....then.....you will believe that you are worthy of change and needing of the effort necessary to change.

A reader of mine, an actress living in NYC once filled out my survey. She chose the following words to describe herself: "ugly, huge, fat, obese, fat, large, rolly polly". She went on to say that a role she was cast in called for her to bend over with her rear end facing the audience, as her co-star shouted "her heart is as big as Texas". I could feel her pain as the audience roared with laughter night after night. As much as I felt for her situation, I told her that I could not accept her adjectives and that she must do them over again, this time picking words that described her, not her body. A week went by before I again heard from her. She said that each time she sat down to redo her words, she started crying and had the hardest time completing a new list, however, complete it she did! The new words?! "Magical, talented, spiritual, gifted, loving, giving, larger than life (clever way to throw in a "big" thought!), musical, convincing". Wow!

If you were to hold the two lists up side by side and compare them, you would NEVER believe that the same woman wrote them. Did just doing this exercise make her thinner? Did she wake up in a size 8 the next morning. NO! But I know for a fact that she made healthier choices the next day. I know that she is no longer feeling sorry for herself, but rather is feeling empowered and excited about the changes she can make in her life. She is down about 70 pounds as of this article...and that is only after 10 months.

Hmmmmm?! Kind of makes you wonder just how powerful the words we choose are. Choose yours carefully, for they really do decide your outcome.

I'm just plesantly plump. I've accepted the fact that I eat healthy, work out and am just meant to look a little chunky.
