Default Arts for Us

A friend of mine (my wife, mostly) is a musician. Her son and my son were born with microcephally. For about a year, she has put together a music program, now called Arts for Us. The premise is having different musical groups (strings quartet, brass quartet, jazz band, acoustic guitar, etc...) put on 45 min concerts for children with disabilities and their families. Afterwords, there is some type of refreshments. We have been to three or four. This program is to put it simply, Awesome.

The kids all enjoy the music. They can be themselves and nobody cares. They dance, clap, rock or whatever they want without anyone shushing them or muting their enthusiasm. The artists understand and enjoy the pure enjoyment of their music.

The saying, "music calms the beast" rings true. Not that the kids are beasts, but their disability seams to be forgotten. My son is a classical music lover. We all have busy lives and cannot pay attention to our child every waking moment. We got him an Ipod and put only classical music on it. When we are busy, he listens and enjoys, eyes wide open, the music.

If you are looking for a gift, try the gift of music.
