At my wits end with Scarlette's pooping issues... help!! (LONG)
Ever since Scarlette started baby food, she has had harder poops. I talked to the doc, as long as she was going regularly (which she was) she was fine. I was told as soon as she started walking, it would get easier for her, because of gravity and the such. Fine. Well, lately, it's been a LOT worse. Right around her first birthday, she was having a LOT of problems getting it out, it would take her DAYS to get it out, and it was super big and super hard. Called the doc again. Told me to put her on fiber, it would regulate her and get softer, it was just the build up that was making it hard. Fine. Did that. Worked for about 2 weeks. She still struggled to get it out, but it was every day. But now, she won't LET herself poop. She crosses her legs and holds it in. I've tried sugar water, warm bathes, anything to help her get it out and the ONLY thing that makes her poop are baby enemas, which I feel so bad giving her. She stops herself from pooping 10+ times a day but a little bit still comes out, enough to give her a rash because of how much I wipe her and how much she poops. She has HORRIBLE diaper rash, which I thought I had under control, it's so bad that she fights like mad to get changed, and now its started bleeding. I called the doc, he said use butt paste for the rash. Did that. Gave her an enema to get it all out, then smothered her tush in butt paste. Woke up and her tush was a lot better (because she wasn't up all night stopping herself and only getting a little bit out and me changing her a bunch of time), but now that I haven't given her the enema in a few days, the rash is back. She won't let herself poop! She is miserable! She lays on the floor with her legs crossed and SCREAMS because she doesn't want to poop! The doc keeps saying, oh this is normal, do this and it works for a little while, then seems to get worse!! Help!! I don't know what to do for her!!! I fear that I am not wiping her that well because of how much she struggles when I change her and that is part of the rash problem. It hurts her sooo much to be wiped, so she fights like mad to stop me. The doc doesn't open until 1pm today, so I am coming on here in hopes that someone can help me... I don't know what to do for her anymore and I'm beginning to think that it's not a normal thing any more.... Thank you so very very much in advance for any help!!

I don't know, but I'm thinking I might find a new doctor (or at least get a second opinion, if possible) because that DOESN'T sound normal to me.
GOOD LUCK!

it's a vicious circle because she knows if she poops it's hurts her so she holds on to it then you give her an enema and make her go and it hurts. Have you got something like Lactulose which over here you can buy over the counter and is suitable for children. But I agree speak to your doctor again and tell him that you've been using enemas so he understands what a problem it's become.

Thank you all... I can't see another dr. because the kids have state insurance, and I would have to change doctors completely, and there are no other good ones near by... I'm going to call him today and tell him that I demand her to be seen and I want tests done. I was reading that milk allergies could do this... He opens in 5 mins, so I'll let you guys all know what he says Thanks guys

What did the doctor have to say?
I'm thinking that the corn syrup in water for her to drink is a good idea.
Giving her a baby enema on an ongoing basis is not the solution.
Makes for unhealthy habits later in life.
Hoping that the doctor gives you good advise.
I'd be tempted to let her run around with a bare behind for a few days to get it healed up.

I had the exact same thing happen with my then 2-year-old (she is 4 now)--even had to go in for xrays b/c bile was so backed up. Her ped started her on Glycolax--now you can get the same thing over the counter--it's called Miralax http://www.miralax.com/miralax/consumer/default.jsp. It was a lifesaver. I am not kidding. It is all natural so you don't have to worry about OD-ing or bad reactions. I am not kidding you, it worked miracles for my dd. She's still on it. Believe me; she was exactly like Scarlette--screaming, yelling, holding it, didn't want to go potty, etc. If this doesn't work, then it's a more serious problem, but I'm telling you this stuff is incredible. It's available at Wal-Mart, Target, etc. No child should go through this pain.

Don't wipe her bottom, give her a little bath or a shower down after she has been to the toilet, wiping will make the skin more sensitive. When you go out use a damp towel, not baby wipes, they are so much better on skin. Too much fiber can cause runny poo to leave by going around the hard poo, which then continues to build up, get some lactulose and slowly give it to her and then wean her off so her body can slowly turn to normal while she experiences small poo's that don't hurt her bottom.

have you tried Miralax? You know Jaecy had all of these same issues (I think you remember anyway!) Miralax usually helped keep her poop soft....also rubbin vaseline down there (you have to get a bit inside her tush) helps lubricate it to come out easier and it sounds gross but KY Jelly works too
Her diet def could affect it, although jaecy never did much of the milk products anyway and still had all of the issues....until she was regulated which only happened a few months ago, it was a cycle that sucked!

Milk could be the culprate. A lot of kiddos can't digest it properly. And a lot of kids that can't digest it, don't test positive for the allergy. Kinda crazy.
As far as getting the poop softer, does she eat a lot of fruit? Strawberries, cantelope, kiwi?
Also PLAIN Yogurt with real strawberries mixed in. Or just the yugurt by itself.
Tiffany ate so much fruit and plain yogurt that her poop was NEVER firm. (Kinda gross)
Good luck to you!!!!
