Default Back Pain!! Only 13 weeks!

With my first pregnancy, I had really bad back pain in a certain area of my back. It was on my right side and almost on my side, and it is a dull, hot pain, like it could be a muscle. I didn't start getting this pain until I was around 30 weeks with Alex, and by 32-33 weeks, it was so severe that I went to the doc, and it turned out to be labor! (However, I had the premature labor stopped with shots 3 times a week, and Alex was born on time!)

I am only 13 weeks now, and I'm really getting this pain in the same spot! It's driving me nuts, and keeping me up at night! I have a couple of night classes two nights a week, and by that time of night, I can hardly sit through a class!

Has anyone else experienced this? What did you do to find relief? I tried having massages, and they get to be too expensive and time consuming, and with my first pregnancy I tried chiropractic care, and wasn't impressed. Help!!

With my last pregancy, I used one of those donut-shaped nursing pillows and wrapped it around my lower back (backwards). Then I could kinda lean back into it and it alliviated the pain a bit. I haven't had any backpain with this pregnancy yet.

have you talked to your doctor to be sure there is not a problem? Aches and pains can be normal especially with the baby doing gymnastics in there. I started having pains basically at my cervix at about 15 weeks (I am 20 now) it felt like stabbing. Come to find out, the baby has his feet down there and I guess he likes to kick. Try to not be sitting for long periods. I know you said you have class, have you tried getting a cushion to sit on or lean against? You could even get a computer chair to leave in the classroom if you sit in the same spot each time. If and when you get a bathroom break, try standing up and stretching and walking some.

It sounds like it could be round ligament pain. It's usually described as pelvic or abdominal pain, but it can sometimes be felt where the other ligaments connect (namely the lower back and sacrum).

Here's a pretty good picture of the ligaments, even if it doesn't show where the broad ligaments attach: http://www.bodytherapyassociates.com/art4pic2.jpg

Since the sacrouterine and broad ligaments stretch around to your lower back if they were stretched in an uncomfortable manner late in your last pregnancy it is possible what you are feeling it them protesting being shifted about again. But I would consult your care provider if you are worried.

I know several women who swore by belly binders to help with ligament pain. That and the ubiquitous mound of pillow(s) under the belly. If it is the ligaments then anything that will help shift your uterus around and off of those ligaments will help. This goes for belly binders to bending forward before you cough or sneeze is it helps.

Just an idea.
