Default BF & OTC Diet Aides

I had lunch with my sister in law today who had a baby on 12/14 and is breastfeeding. She told me she was taking an over the counter diet pill (I believe she said it was Dexatrim) and that her doc said it was ok to use while breastfeeding.

Now, I'm now where near an expert but I think that just sounds like a bad idea. I urged her to get a second opinion about taking them but she said she was comfortable with it. Should I keep bugging her about it or is it safe?

It is absolutely unsafe. . .her doctor is a moron if he told her it was safe to take OTC diet aides like Dexatrim and breastfeed at the same time. Do you want the lengthy book explanation as to why doing this is unsafe, unnecessary and could pose a serious health risk to her baby? Or you can PM me, or have her PM me and I'll explain further. She shouldn't be comfortable with it. . .she should be scared. Have her e-mail them (or do it yourself) and ask them which one of their products is for breastfeeding mothers. They'll back away real quick I am sure.

I did a little reasearch and found that this product has undergone two re-calls in the past six years to remove 2 harmful/deadly ingreadients in it. Personally I would not take it or risk passing this drug onto my child through breast milk.

I found a site
that may be helpful.

Well, sorta good news and sorta bad.

My brother knew about the diet pills but didn't know they were harmful. I told him they were not good for the baby (I gave him just a few details...didn't want him to totally freak out) and Amy should not be taking them while BF'ing. Hung up with me and was going to talk to his wife.

He called me back and said she decided to stop BF, put Ashley on formula so she can get back to her regular size. She claimed she was only taking 1/2 a pill a day for a few days now and that her doctor told her it was ok.

So, at least the baby won't get anymore of the harmful diet drugs but she also isn't getting the benefits of the breast milk.

Thanks again for your support. I didn't want to start a big hoopla with the family if I was way off base here. You have no idea how some things can get my very large family’s panties in a wad.

I have to say the same thing. I'm not pre-preg size in part bc I soooo love junk food but in part too bc I've had 5 kids in six years. . .but people usually mistake me for the nanny. I don't look like I've had 5 kids--bm rocks--and I'm close to my pre preg size even with all that junk food--. But yes, she needed to either stop the bfing and ff or stop the diet pills. On a side note I'll repeat, if her doctor told her she could take Dexatrim while bfing he's a moron. She should find a new doctor bc who knows what other quackery he's capable of.
