Many women breastfeed through pregnancy with no problems at all. I know Val has and so have many of my friends. In a healthy pregnancy, there is generally no problem. With that said, I will tell you that it can depend on your personal history. When I got pg with my second baby, my oldest was only 14 months, but I chose to wean her. I did have a history of miscarriage and felt it wasn't worth the risk. She weaned easily and I still feel that with my personal history, I made the best decision. However, if there is no history of miscarriage, bf is fine during pregnancy, although it can be a bit uncomfortable as the nipples are more sensitive. At least that is what I have heard from friends.

Okay here are a few quick things:
First of all, nursing during pg doesn't cause mc but can possibly cause pre-term labor and that in general is the big concern. If you are high risk and/or a woman for whom nipple stimulation sends you into labor--might want to think about stopping.
With that said, MOST babies will not be that interested in nursing during pg. Your milk changes and tastes funny due to the hormones. On top of that you start producing colostrum at the end. So probably your baby will wean although as many of you know I had a few that did not.
Regarding pg while getting bfing. I don't want to say it never happens but if you're looking to get pg within the first year after giving birth AND you are going to exclusively bf on demand for as long as the baby wants. . .I would readjust your expectations. Most women will not see their periods return until at least 6 months IF they are bfing this way and then on top of that fertility returns in stages.
Using bfing as birth control I have never gotten pregnant before 13-14 mos pp. But of course every body is different.

I breastfed Tiffany till she weaned herself....I was about 20 weeks or so pg. I never mentioned it to my ob....I new I wasn't going to wean her if he told me to. And my sister is an RN and told me all kinds of crazy stuff about how if I didn't quit I would miscarry.....well I did not. I had a 9 lb. baby. (I know everyone is different) But I like to think that if God lets us get pg after a certain amount of time bfing that it is ok and not harmful to the fetus.
