Birth Defects Poll/Survey
Hello, My name is Nirvana and I'm 17 years old. I'm doing a research paper on birth defects, and I would like to know if many of the birth defects could possibly come from using painkillers/relievers while in labor, if they are a family history, if they are from using drugs and/or alcohol during pregnancy, or possibly from using any type of painreliver while pregnant, even possibly before knowing you were pregnant(Tylenol, Advil, Aleve, Ibuprofen, ect.) If you want to keep it private, you can either reply in a private message, or just take the poll, but it would be greatly appreciated for people to be honest. I would also like to know how many people believe it is a possible chance that using painkillers/relievers during labor could cause birth defects because of the low knowledge of the medication.

Hello and welcome to families. Many of our members are or have been nurses. My self once being a baby nurse I can tell you this.
defects could possibly come from using painkillers/relievers while in labor,
Birth defects have been proven to be caused by alcohol drugs and Class D and above medications. There are studies out there that you can get if you do a bit of research. In no way do defects come from painkillers during labor as the baby is already fully developed and in cases of pre-term labor the baby has already developed to a certain point.
Please reasearch on what the term "birth defect" means and then feel free to discuss this on our forum as this is a bit touchy for our pregant or trying to get pregnant moms.

That is true, but, defects can come at any time in the life, for a baby, painkillers may be like drugs for a teenager or an adult, it may still mess with their minds and give them braindamage because its still in their blood system, that is the way I am looking at it.

ok here is the definition of a birth defect.
Birth defect: Any defect present in a baby at birth, irrespective of whether the defect is caused by a genetic factor or by prenatal events that are not genetic. The medical community does not consider anything after birth a "birth defect".
Hope this helps

I can see who voted for what, so I don't think it is private. And I don't see how any pain meds during LABOR would cause a BIRTH defect....it's just not possible!

Yes, this is not a private poll. At the time it states that others may see the choices you have made.
I can see those answers myself (without being logged in).

The March of Dimes has some excellent resources for your term paper.
There are issues with the environment (pollution, smoking),
lack of medication (folic acid),
genetic disorders,
mother's exposure to Chicken Pox or Measles,
and more than can cause birth defects without the mother ever doing
anything herself to cause the birth defect.
