Question Blood type

My doctor told me that my blood type was O negative and I would have to have a shot at 28 weeks and possibly again at delivery...depending on the baby's type. Can anyone explain why? Should I be concerned? The doctor said she is O negative and it's not a big deal...so why do I need a shot? I would appreciate any input.

It is called Rh incombatibility. What happens when you are neg and your babe is blood type positive is that your body produces antibodies and attack your baby. If you are given the shot it helps your baby not be harmed by your own body.

Your doc prob said it's not a big deal to get the shot....which it isn't. It'll keep your baby safe

Yep. It happens when the mom has negative blood type and the dad has positive blood type (O, A, B, AB doesn't really matter, just the Rh + or -). If a Rh- mom has a baby that has Rh+ blood it is not really an issue the first go around except that her body will build antibodies that will attack all future Rh+ babies. So Rh- mom's are usually given a rhogam shot at 28 weeks and then after delivery if the baby is Rh+. If you deliver an Rh- baby then you will not need the second shot! Hope this makes sense. Btw, I am Rh- and I have had 3 Rh- children.
