Default BM drying up. =(

I'm not even 3wks pp and my milk seems to be drying up. For the first few days after the baby was born he was having problems latching on, but before I left the hospital we were finally able to get him to do so. And he was BFing and supplement with formula afterwards when needed. But he wasn't gaining any weight so they have me feeding him every 2-3 hrs with 3-4oz at a time. The bad thing is he's a sleeper so when it comes to feeding time he doesn't want to latch and will fight me for up to 15mins til I give in and feed him a bottle. So I've been pumping, but as of late I've only been getting 4-7oz a day total. I still want him to have the BM, but I'm at a lose right now over this. I go to the dr tomorrow and I'm gonna talk to her about it. She told me before if I started having problems she'd write out a script to help the problem, but I haven't heard of that before.

Anyone have any advice or been on a script to help out the problem??

i took a medication called domperidone and also fenugreek (natural) to help me with my lactation and it helped me a whole lot though, i had had a breast reduction and was able to bf for 6 months so she was probably talking about something like that.

Start by reading this. There is a "breastfeeding index" that if you search at the top right corner--it'll come up--and there are more than a few blogs about supply issues. There's also a blog on galactagogues that discusses both fenugreek and prescriptions.

you're welcome--if you need any more help let me know. You're not on bc yet are you? Do you have other issues like PCOS? Those will affect supply as well.

A script will not necessarily help you unless the latch issue is solved. You will have more milk, but in a normal situation your body will rise to meet the demand of your baby. So if you don't have enough milk--there's an underlying issue that needs to be addressed. It's not really advisable to take a prescription to increase milk supply so you can pump.

With that said, I used fenugreek to help me with the twins. . .you can pick it up at a GNC or CVS or something.

I talked to my dr today, and she put me on a script for the time being. It's to help my milk supply build back up to that he will stay latched and actually nurse more so I don't have to pump. Not sure of the name off hand right now tho. I know I want him to have BM for at least 2-3 months, so we'll have to see where it goes from there.
I did nurse my DD for just over 2.5 mo before I had to quit cause I was going back to work. At least with DS I'm not working so hopefully this will work out better for him.
