Default Borderline Diabetes

I had my glucose test done today. The test where you drink the nasty stuff and an hour later have your blood drawn. My result was 149 and the doctor said the safe cut off is 140. She has me going in next week for the 3 hour test where you drink the stuff and they draw your blood at 1, 2 and 3 hours afterwards. I've never had to do that one but know it has to be done fasting.

Has anyone ever had a high first reading then the second one be okay? I'm a little worried because we do have diabetes in my family but I know that gestational diabetes often goes away after birth.

I have GD too ( in my previous pregnancy and again in this one), over here in the uk you just get one test - sweet drink and blood tests before drink then 2 hours afterwards, i havent had a GTT this time round, i just hadto monitor my sugars and that picked it up, i have been on insulin now for 4 weeks ( since 12 weeks) and tbh its much better to be on insulin, i have much better control and i have more control over what i eat.

the only down side for me is taking my blood sugar 8 times a day, my fingers look like pin cushions

My doctor was telling me I would probably have to test on my arm if I do have to test. I have had many people say it is better to be on insulin but that still requires diet control right? I am just worried about the baby because my hubby is hypoglycemic therefore I wasn't sure if the baby could have problems related to all this. I know they can be bigger and have problems immediately after birth because of the withdrawls of all the insulin and stuff. Have any of your kids had lasting effects?

you still do have an element of diet control, but its much easy on insulin, i can eat more *restricted* food as the insulin helps ( i dont stuff myself with chocolate and cakes but i can have a slice or a bar after a meal if i want one). If you get good control then baby shouldnt have any problems as you deal with the sugar better and it doesnt all go to the baby. you have more problems if you dont get good control then baby gets used to a higher level of sugar and is more likely to hypo once born, but again regular feeding can help stabilise they sugars with in 24 -48 hours.

the only side effect my son had was that i was late being diagnosed so he was 9lb 6oz and 10 days early, i dread to think how big he would have been if they let me go full term. he had no problems ith his blood sugars at all after birth

i know LOTS of women who had to take the 3 hour test. i think i'm the only one who didn't. they all turned out fine, and none of them ended up having GD. just a severe case of boredom.

Update: I actually ended up in the hospital the morning I was to have the test. I woke up in the middle of the night with severe back pain and right hip pain. After urinating, there was blood on the tissue. Come to find out I had a severe kidney infection and kidney stones. The doctor did a sonogram of the baby and my kidneys and gave me antibiotics and such. She is actually thinking this may have been why my blood sugar test was increased but we are still going to repeat the test to confirm (after the infection is gone). Now I get to lay in bed and rest and hope that no more stones pass anytime soon. I would seriously compare the pain to labor but she told me to take Tylenol for the pain (to me this is like drinking water at this point), but hopefully the infection will clear soon and the test will be fine. Thanks to all who have commented
