I went through this in 7th grade with algebra. His teacher called and said he is NOT showing his work. His answer? This is a dumb problem, she knows the answer anyway, why I gotta show her? A lot of work for no good reason.
He has career goals and is now working toward them - but now calculus is really really hard.
I don't think kids tie homework, especially reinforcement of basic skills, into career goals.
My sons attitude changed when he was put into an advanced English class. Before he used to BS his way through, everyone thought minimal effort was fine. Then they decided to challenge him - and he realized, if he was going to be raising his hand and answering questions and showing off and making jokes, he had better know what he was talking about since the girls did and they could put him down one two three. So even though he doesn't like reading much, he really worked at it.
