I'm also going to chime in and say no bottles in the hospital if you can avoid it.

I add the "if you can avoid it" only because my DS had a bottle in the hospital (only time he tasted formula until he was 9 months old). I nursed him within 10 minutes of birth. I nursed him about 2 hours later. 2 hours or so after that I tried to feed him again--no latch. After his bath (when he was nice and agitated) I tried again. No latch. All the nurses at my hospital are lactation trained and there are 6 lactation consulants on staff so somebody is there 24/7. The lactation consultant came in. No latch.

Finally, after multiple nurses tried helping me and a visit from the LC it'd been 5.5 hrs since he last ate the nurses called the ped. who said to give him 15 cc's of formula. He drank 14cc's from that bottle and that was it. We had no latching problems after that.

I am 34.5 weeks pg with this one and will only allow this baby to have a bottle in the hospital if it's a matter of forumla or no food like it was last time. (But since this is my 2nd I'm a much more experienced breastfeeder so hopefully it'll go better!)

You don't have to give a bottle in that situation. . .there are other ways to feed the baby that won't cause issues with the sucking. Just so pp knows there are other options. Babies are little funny people aren't they?

Good to know! Hopefully this little girl will be more cooperative than her big brother!

What are some other ways to feed the baby you were talking about (just in case)?

Yeah I have a whole different set of guidelines for NICU babies.

Over here (UK) you can opt to cup feed the baby or use a syringe, I am planning on BF this Baby ( failed with the first one, too depressed with the second) and i have put on my birth plan if i have any post birth problems that the baby must be cup fed no bottles!
