Default "Mother of the Year Award"

My husband found this on a website that labeled it as the "Mother of the Year" award. It was a picture from a local newspaper. I'll leave the comments to all of you.

It's a strange sight, alright. I put a link to the site and took out the picture for copyright reasons.

We avoid copy paste, because we want to avoid copyright problems with some sites, and it's friendly to link back and forth.

Thanks, I couldn't find the site that he had taken it from -- he just emailed me it at work. Thanks for finding the link

I don't see an open can. I think that is a fire hydrant. All the woman has is a cigarette.

You know, it really is awful, but her smoking would be no ones business if the newspaper hadn't taken that stupid picture. Yes, it is likely to do more harm to an unborn baby than living with jackhammer noise. But really, what was the paper thinking - publishing that picture, with the cigarette and the spaced out look on her face, and then THAT CAPTION. I really think the paper was inviting irony.

This was in Virginia, and I have noticed driving through there that way more people smoke in public places than here in the northeast. This woman may well have thought nothing of it, and the reporter and photographer may have also thought no big deal, EVERYONE smokes.

Someone may have wanted to distract attention from complaints about the jackhammers in the neighborhood too. Sort of a bias, look at the type of people who are complaining, pregnant women who smoke. I mean really, it's supposed to be about the effect of jackhammers on the neighborhood, and suddenly everyone's talking about this pregnant woman smoking. And who pays attention to the jackhammer opposition? Would be interesting to know what happened after this picture was first published.

Yeah, well, I'm cynical, I live in NJ.

At any rate, I think the picture was originally published in 2004, so lets hope the woman and her now born baby are healthy and happy and the jackhammers are silent.
