Default Cancer diagnosis

My mom found out yesterday that she has small cell lung cancer. She is currently in the hospital due to a partial lung collapse from a biopsy she had on Monday. Mom has been very ill for about two years with an undiagnosed illness and has been unable to work. She used to be a nurse and I think the diagnosis is probably scarier for her because she understands more than the average person what is happening and what will happen to her body. She started Chemotherapy yesterday and will start radiation therapy soon.

Mom lives across the country from me, so I am not her primary caregiver. My sister now has that job. Any thoughts about what I can do to help my mom through this very trying time?

oh Valerie... I'm so sorry to hear the bad news.

I think with you on the other side of the country, the best thing you can do is try to help keep her spirits up? Maybe some care packages would help cheer her up... or, if she has a good sense of humor, anti-care packages -- a friend of mine was in the hospital and I sent her a box of the lamest stuff I could find -- old crappy CDs, pencils, all kinds of weird random boring things. But she got a good laugh on opening it.

Valerie, I am so sorry to hear of your mom's illness. I too live in a different state from my parents and it is such a helpless feeling when something like this happens. I'm sure that your mom is like mine, they love it when you call. Call often and just let her hear your voice. I'm sure that it will perk her spirits daily!
