Default Choosing the baby's sex

(i'm not sure if this should go here.. sorry if it's in the wrong spot)

I was reading NyTimes.com, and there's a place where people are commenting on being able to choose your baby's sex. Apparently fertility doctors are able to do this now. Personally, i think it's a good idea --- but with caution. First or second time moms i don't think should use this technology. But parents who are really trying for a girl, and already have 2+ boys, should absolutely be able to use this.

What do you think? Should we be able to choose our baby's sex?

Its an interesting idea, but i belive that is something we should leave up to God. He will send he what we need in this life.

I wold not condem others for differnt beliefs on the subject.

I don't agree with being able to choose the sex of your child. God gives us that special little person for a reason.

I actually take issue with fertility treatments in general. However, I am opposed to anyone deliberatly going through IVF just to have a certain gender as you are implying people should be able to do. I suppose if a family is already going through IVF anyways, I don't necessarily take issue with it (beyond being opposed to fertility treatments in general anyways.)

I think it is a good idea only under special circumstances. Like when there is something wrong with your child and you need the umbilical cord blood from a sibling that is the same sex. Then it is ok but if its just b/c you want a girl/boy then I guess that is a personal question!

No--umbilical cord blood is still so uncertain of a science that it would be highly unethical to suggest that a mother have another baby of the same sex just to donate the blood. Although I do see your point. . .it's just that there are no guarantees.

I also believe that God should get to make that decision. Twizplus made a good point though, about if you are already having to do IVF, why not, but otherwise, it's a little creepy for me.

Either way I believe it is a personal choice. Everyone is different and Everyone has an opinion about the subject but in the end it comes down to your own personal beliefs. I am Catholic and this would be against my religion but then again so is IVF and that is how I got my miracle baby. Sometimes when you want something so bad....your religion or beliefs don't matter. So I guess I can see how some women would want a certain sex so bad that they would do this but that is there choice. I was given the option to have DNA testing done to our embryos. We would have known the sex and if they carried any genetic abnormalities. I refused the testing b/c it was not something I wanted to know but then I know may women who have done the testing. This is one of those questions with no right or wrong answer. It all comes down to YOU and what you believe! Either way I say this was a good question! It really makes you think! Good luck everyone!

I think that any baby being born is a pure miracle and that it shouldnt be in the hands of yourself to determine the sex... You get a baby in the end regardless of its sex... Wouldnt you rather want a healthy baby than to choose if whether it is to be a boy or a girl???
