Default Climbing Out

DS has started climbing out of his crib... Last night, he did it at 1 a.m and refused to go back to sleep without me staying in his room with him. After about 1.5 hours, I said goodnight and left the room. Within 15 minutes, he jumped out of his crib, I heard the thump and ran into his room. He was laying on the ground, screaming! He was Ok... But then there was no putting him back in his crib last night after that....

Now, I have a whole new world of trouble ahead. His crib used to be a safe place for him (and us...) Now we have to figure out what to do next? Do we just lower the side of his crib and let him climb in and out or do we get him in a big boy bed or convert the crib to a toddler bed? Do we gate him in his room (at the top of the stairs)? Or do we just gate the stairs? So much to consider.... Ugh!

They have screens you can buy for the top of the crib that prevents this.

Or, a it may be time for a toddler bed.

Big bed and safety gate on the bedroom door. All perfectly normal behaviour

How old is he?

My dd luckily never went through this stage...she would stay in the crib all day if we would let her...but when she hit 18 months i was preg and wanted her to get used to a big girl bed b4 her sister came since she would be in the crib....

transistion was pretty easy, even for a lil one who LOVED her crib....we made the crib into the toddler bed, and put one of those gates along the side so she didnt fall out.....
then she moved on to a cinderalla toddler bed but she kept falling out of that one....so we went back to the crib toddler bed.....about a month later she was in her full sized daybed! She needs a chair to get up onto it because its to high up...we still use the gate on the side...

and we actually used a gate out in the hallway because our bedrooms are right next to one another and if she couldnt come into our room when she woke up she would flip out!!

good luck with everything!!!

Thanks ladies!

We have decided to convert his crib to a toddler bed and then place a gate at the top of the stairs. He sleeps with his door closed, so I don't want to gate his doorway. He would be able to hear us downstairs (since his room is just at the top of the stairs) So, I do close his door at night, but sometimes I don't want to risk waking him so I leave it cracked.... This is when I worry about him climbing out of the crib and then falling down the stairs....

But we will survive!

Default flying leap

Well, ladies. Last night was awful! DS took a flying leap out of his crib (which still had not been converted to the transitional bed) and landed on his face & head! My poor little guy didn't even know what happened. He was bloody, dazed and just wanted to go back to sleep! DH and I were trying to keep him awake and decide whether we should go to the ER in case he had a head injury.... We finally got him up and walking and talking and decided he didn't need the ER. But at 3:30am, we were converting his crib to the transitional bed!

Man - we should have done that over the weekend!

My poor lil guy looked all beat up with the blood coming out of his mouth and nose. It stopped very quickly, but it was awful!

Oh no! Poor little guy I'm glad he's okay...there's nothing more helpless feeling than when your little one is hurt
