Default College Financial Support

How many of you plan to financially support your children all through college? My father paid 80% of my tuition and room and board. I had t pay the other 20% as well as all my books and all my living expenses like food etc. It was HUGE financial burden on me, I had to work A LOT and ended up with a huge credit card debt when all was said and done. he did it because he wanted me to have "something invested" in it. How much do you intend on, or do you pay of your childs education?

This is a disagreement between me and hubby. My family couldn't afford it so we were responsible. His family felt that only one school was 'good enough' so they would only pay if he went to that school.
We have about 10 years till our oldest would be able to go to college, but right now I am hoping for scholarships.
My brother is at a private school - about 30k / year and his is tution is about 90% paid by military (he is Army National Guard reserves) and scholarships - I hope my girls learn from his example!

Don't just hope for scholarships.

Check out my blog, there are some older articles there on funding college and resources for finding scholarships.

Of course, getting my own kid motivated is another matter......

Janet,
Thanks for the resources. I'm coming up on needing this stuff for my daughter. I plan to pay all her tuition and most of her costs. She needs to work during the summers to help with extra expenses, and she will probably have to take out some student loans. Unfortunately, the colleges she is hoping to attend are very, very expensive. Her top choice is Stanford, where her father went. I told her that if she gets accepted, we'll frame her acceptance letter, hang it on the wall and then send her someplace I can afford. Yikes. We'll see what happens.

My own parents paid all my basic living expenses and tuition, but when I got married (halfway through my education) I was completely on my own. I think that was good way to do it. I didn't take for granted their help, and when I made a completely adult decision, to get married, then they let me be an adult.
