Easy for you to say. Much less complicated for men to have a surgical option.

Tubal ligation is major surgery. And I had the insides removed for cancer. Takes a while to recover from that. I don't recommend it for contraception!

Which is why iuds are such a great option for contraception, but we need medical advice and followthrough for them.

Jo your right, on the norm you have to have had a baby to get an IUD, but there are unusual circumstances I guess

I HAVE had a copper IUD, in place since 2 months after my 2nd son was born. So....about 3 years, 6 months ago. I never intended to have it in place for the full 10 years; rather, my gyn and I know that my body does NOT like extra hormones so the pill and the Mirena were out of the question.
If I had been on the board this last week, I would have responded, but I've been battling a NASTY case of bronchitis, and trying to get my garden ready for planting. Is that a good enough excuse?

I beg your pardon,,,, I was told certain things and so it seems, in MY experiences, with birth control, that we (all women) are just a giganic lab experiement when it comes to birth control...
I started getting the melasma circa five yrs ago, roughly 5 yrs into my copper iud....
Got it removed 2 days ago, and now I am shrinking in my abdomen,,, I am peeing some clear fluid all over myselft.
Those of you women who think that you understand or know what birth control is doing to your body, even the "so called - non-hormonal kind" need to take a real check into it.
I am done with all types of birth control.
So sorry if I offended some of you, but that was not my intentions, this thread needs to be explored here.
I wouldn't want any of you going thru what i did.... hair loss, and such....

To expand further, my removal symptoms, after 10 years were loss of some major fluid retention in the unterus, and i am feeling MUCH better, but that is just me. I am a sensitive individual. I understand coper can affect estrogen metabolism.

And women, I anm not really willing to let anything affect my metabolism from here on out,,,!!

Appreciate the update. Did not realize that the IUD could cause so many side effects to a woman.

Did your doctor suggest that you leave it in place for the 10 years?

Are they normally left for a lifespan of 10 years?

Interesting questions.

I believe that we can all learn through your experience.

As I said before, my family or personal friends that have had an IUD have had problems and had the IUDs was removed.

Lol, you guys. Yes I am on your plan now twinzplus3. My partner is fully aware and supportive.... No more chemicals.
Yes the gyno doc said and still maintains its good for 10 yrs, maybe it shouldn't be in there that long. I didn't start having mealsma until about 6 yrs...
Interesting note, a girlfriend told me today that she asked her dermatologist about the melasma and the first thing that the doc asked was if I was on the IUD with copper. So, I think the info it is out there, but not really reported or confirmed with research at this point.
