Default Crib Bumpers

I read in this months Baby Talk that you don't need bumpers in the crib and that they can be a hazard once the baby can roll over. We have a bumper and I'm wondering if I want to take it out. She's not rolling yet. When is the normal time to take it out of the crib?

our youngest is 5 months and she still has hers. I have just untied one side which faces us(she doesnt even go near the other side ) so she moves it around and I catch her peaking thru the bars of her crib all the time my only concern is she sticks her little legs thru the bars and then tries to roll at least when the bumper is there she cant get her legs in the bars. but we will probably romove it when she can sit up on her own.

I was hesitant to use one with Riley because I heard the same thing, but we tried it and I kept on eye on him and we never had a problem. I am planning on using one again. I was more scared of him getting an arm or leg stuck and twisted between the bars than rolling into it and not being able to breathe. But once he got a little older we took it out. I know you can get "breathable bumpers" that are made with more of a mesh material (i'm pretty sure we ordered it from Target)- we bought one originally and it didn't fit our crib since its not standard size, but maybe that is an option?

I took the bumper off at about 3 1/2 months for good. I tried before that, but found she would scoot to the side and I'd wake up to her crying because her head was touching a bar. I had to wait until she had better control over her body and after that the bumper was gone. She's happy because she can look around at everything in the morning, and I can see her better from my bed.

IME the types of hazards that they are talking about are extremely rare. I have yet to have a baby where if I put her in the middle of the crib would be able to roll all the way to one end (w/o waking up mind you) and then manage to get her head (which if she's rolling this much is pretty big) behind a tightly tied crib bumper. If they can roll that much, they are generally big enough to not be able to get stuck. When they're still small enough to get stuck, they can't roll quite that much. Sure, it COULD happen. . .but i could also get hit by a truck while crossing the street.

Yeah I'd have to agree.

Our bumper has dragonflies and flowers on it and Grace has just discovered them and when I go in there in the morning she is always reaching out to them and staring at them. Cute.

I didn't think of the suffication hazard as them getting behind it, more of them rolling toward it and having their face pressed up against it. She doesn't roll yet...more shift. I'll put her in the crib so she's straight and when she wakes up she's at an angle.

Thumbs up Crib bumper pad

Hello,
I read all of your posts and I did feel the same way about not using it but I found at the Babiesrus and looked around and found the perfect bumper pad.. it s called Breatheable Bumper Pad and it is safe!! I bought it and went home, set that up around the crib and I looked at it from distance and I m totally happy with it.. I will not remove it until it s really neccessary.. she s 5 weeks old and she s already crawling on her back so I m worried about her head (eekk) so I really love that breatheable bumper pads..
You can check it out at babiesrus if you are not so sure about it.
Cheers

I used bumpers until my kids were in toddler beds ((Vinnie was 13 months and CeJay was 15 months)) and they never bothered with them.
