Question Crying From Siblings

I've got a concern about my two year old and her new sister. During lunch one day last week, Amber (our 4 month old) let out a huge shriek cry when Heike (our 2 year old) wasn't looking at her and it appeared to have scared her. Now every time Amber makes a noise that remotely sounds like crying (which can include squeals of joy), Heike starts crying asking for me because she's "scared".

Did anyone experience this with their kids? Did it pass? Any thoughts on what I might do to get Heike to calm down? It's especially bad when we drive somewhere and Amber is fussing.

I have found that all of my children have exhibited various behaviors when their new siblings arrive. . .and by that I mean w/i the first year after their birth. I would just hold her a love her and reassure her.

I think it is normal. With my kids, it helped to explain that crying is how babies communicate because they can't talk. Now my girls interpret the cries and tell me what he wants.

Thanks for your posts, ladies. We are trying to get Heike to understand that Amber can't use words, so she uses cries. I'll try asking Heike to help us figure out what they mean. Maybe it'll help her a bit. In the meantime, we'll continue to reassure her that Amber doesn't mean her any harm.
