Designer Babies - yes or no?
There's been a lot in the news lately about designer babies. Not only could you select via bio tech for gender and health traits, you could actually "design" your kid for height, hair and eye color, etc.
So is this good or not?
And what happens if you get "unsatisfactory" results? Can't return the merchandise.

Anyone seen the movie Gattaca? A prime example of what would happen to our society if such a thing happened. Those "love" babies would be deemed genetically inferior . Don't we have enough racism is society?

Lessly, that sounds a lot like Brave New World. Only in that scenario, the babies are not birthed at all, and anyone who does the "natural" thing is an outcast.

I think it is wrong, if you are highly likely to pass something negative onto your child, aspergers, sickle cell, spina bifida, pcos etc don't have kids! If all you care about is appearance you probably shouldn't be having children. I'm not sure how they would do eye colour as the gene for blue can also create brown eyes, the same happens with green too.

Samual I am SUPER offended by this comment. PCOS being listed with everything else you listed was a slap in the face of A LOT of women who are on this site and many many others. I can understand listing the other things you listed but PCOS!! You really need to learn to keep your piggish comments to yourself. Women with PCOS have alot of complications getting pregnant and have a lot of heartache with it. My mother and sister both have PCOS!! They both have 3 biological kids. My mom has two girls and a boy and my sister had two boys and a girl.
And not to be rude Samual but you know nothing about what it takes to TTC and how much hurt it can cause. But regardless of what you may pass on to your child that doesnt mean that you have to say oh I cant have my dream of having biological children.

If you read articles about the misuse of this technology you would see I'm stating the most commonly required screening, if you support the killing of all the embryo's discarded thats your call, but I think its disgusting. You've not had to see your three year old daughter die from pneumonia due to cystic fibrosis, her 'parents' knew they were carriers but they carried on anyway when they could've stopped her ever suffering.

It has been some time since my genetics classes so I may be wrong, but I do believe eye color, skin color, & hair color are a combination of many many genes. That is why it is difficult to guarantee results. Several genetic diseases & gender are a result of one gene from each parent, which is very very easy to determine or "fix". I would see nothing wrong with a parent making sure they didn't get both "bad genes" so there baby wouldn't have cystic fibrosis. Most parents don't know they carry a certain disease until they have a child with it.
I do think it is going to be a long long long time before we get to the point that it may become a problem. I personally think it is weird and a little wrong, aside from most purely genetic diseases. I really don't think it is going to be that popular. I just don't think people are going to pay the cost for a blond haired blue eyed boy. And after they are told what they have to go though and it’s not a guarantee people are just not going to do it.
I think this will be very hard to put regulations on. Who decides what can be fixed and what can't. Which deseases are ok to fix and which ones are not. How far do you go with looks, gender, intelligence, etc.
Ok, I was thinking. What if it does get to the point (many many many years from now) where all/most babies are genetic creations. Wouldn't we be creating a very very small gene pool. Don’t small gene pools create more health problems? I do believe diversity is vital for survival. And what about evolution. I think we would be messing with some we shouldn't be.

It it too complex to define as good or not. I think it can be good but feel it well end up being used in a not so good way. I think health traits are ok but where do you draw the line?
