Default Discussion on spices

I cook quite often and have accumulated lots of spices in the pantry, most of which I use quite often.

Before the couponing days, used to use McCormick or whatever brands were available in the supermarkets. Then, I read about buying spices in the bulk jars from Whole Foods (or the like) and get them cheap and good quality. I have supplemented some of my spice bottles like that and found them to be pretty good.

Now, I have read about Penzey's spices being really good. I have bought lots of spices from them and found pretty good quality (some spices do smell and look better than regular ones at their store). Prices are quite reasonable too.

So my question is, how do you like Penzey's if you use their spices. How do you think they compare to the spices found in bulk? Do you think there are sanitary problems with buying the spices in bulk (cuz everyone can open the jars and touch the spices...etc.) Do you think it is cheaper still to buy in bulk?

I compared and found in some instances, some dried herbs are still cheaper to buy in bulk...

Your thoughts and comments on spices are very welcome! Thanks.

When I first tried Penzey's, I bought the smallest bottles available (in plastic containers) and I find myself finishing them off pretty quickly. For the spices I use a lot of (like paprika, I bought the larger size)....

If you happen to have an Amish community near you, they usually have resturants/gift shops. Ours sells spices by the pound in smaller quantity jars. Very reasonably priced and really fresh.

Have also been growing our own herbs like sage, rosemary, basil and mint. Tried drying the rosemary....just cut the sprigs out and dried them by the window seal. Worked out great and smells better than the bottled dried ones I bought.

Okay, so I guess a LOT of folks have a Boots kittie ... but still ... I had to comment.
