do have make everyone take their shoes off
we have a new white carpet and the only way to keep it clean is to make the family and all visitors put slippers on when they arrive.we all love to walk around and relax in barefeet and soft comfy slippers.friends love to come to our house because we are all so chiiled out. also i leave a slection of attractive slippers by the door. as soon as visitors see us a answer the door in slippers and see the carpet they dont have a problem. we have many friends we the same policy. i wont go to house where they only make children take of their shoes. i find that very rude. when we visit friends we never go without taking our slippers and volunteer to put them. some poeple feel uncomfortable about making visitors wear slippers so by putting them on voluntarily its prevent any embarrassment and conflict. do you all aggree with me if not why not.my canadian friends say thats its considered very rude not to takes your shoes off in the house.and that its common place to see a selection of slippers by the door for everyone to put on. why do people have such a problem with wearing slippers especially in cold weather.dont poeple like to feel relaxed in the house.try to be as honest as possible.i know this suject is very contentious.why is that. do you feel that you have the right to drag the outside world into your house.why would yoy not want to put on your slippers and chill out.iv have never had a problem with it. the family all agree.its also nice to get slippers as a surprise present.my teenage daughters adore their christmas floppy slippers at gave them. do you buy your family and friends slippers as presents. lets make this a good open and honest discussion and not feel offended if people disagree.

I think it's a canadian thing...we take our shoes of in our house and everyone that we know does the same thing...though I never ask someone to put slippers on. Socks are fine with me

Yep...its kinda frustrating when you have a clean house and someone wil drag their dirt inside. we also have the same policy, we ask visitors to remove their shoes and take the slippers inside the house.

I don't know why it would be contentious. Here in the states, we have many people who are asian and practice taking shoes off - and leave slippers by the door. When I've shown houses, it is customary to let the realtor know ahead of time that people are expected to remove their shoes and walk in their stocking feet or slippers. I have even seen doctors put disposable shoe covers by the door for people to use.

I do think it's rude. It's carpet! It's meant to get walked on!! Of course, my guests can take off their shoes if they want to, but I really don't care one way or the other. It's carpet! Of course, I'm very American and the 3rd of six children and I have a 2 year old. I have white berber carpet and I just get it steamed whenever I need to.

We live in the South with red clay and everyone takes their shoes off when they go in someones house. Red clay does not come out of carpet no matter how you have it cleaned. When we moved here our realtor told us of the custom and it seems to be true, people don't give it a second thought. Off with your shoes.

I say lead by example. . .I wouldn't be offended to go over to someone's house and be asked to take off my shoes but as a guest in someone's house I'll usually ask and/or see what they've done. My mil used to have a pile of shoes by the door and so I knew to take mine off. This is one reason why I love hard wood floors.

That's what I usually do, I really don't find it an issue. It's completely fine.

I think that you are well within your rights to request people to remove their shoes, as it is your home and your white carpet that you paid for. It is widely practised in my culture to remove your shoes when entering another persons home. One of the reasons is hygiene. You dont know where their shoes have been - and lets look at what a pair of high heel shoes can do to lovely polished wooden floors. If you think about a group of 2 - 4 people in shoes on your carpet and your young children crawling around on your floor. Think public toilets, footpaths, public transport...on your carpet.
