Does anyone else here have PCOS?
I am curious if there are any other women with polycystic ovary syndrome. What do you do to cope with this syndrome? What medications are you on? Do you have a good doctor?
For me, I'm taking Metformin 1500/mg each day. I'm also on birth control pills. This combination of medications has helped me so much. I always felt so tired and "icky" all of the time before I started taking the medication. I had trouble finding a good doctor, but now I have a great doctor who listens to my concerns.

I have had PCOS. I guess technically I don't anymore because I've had a total hysterectomy, but I too took (and still take) metformim because of the resulting insulin resistance. A low-carb (not non-carb) diet is also very helpful (because of the insulin resistance) -- it helps to keep your blood sugar levels on a more even keel which in turn helps with the fatigue factor. Finding a good doctor who listens and cares is the key -- my doctor is wonderful.

I too have PCOS, what I discovered was exercising (I started working out at Curves) which helped my insulin resistance and helped me to acheieve pregancy. I also agree with a low carb lifestyle including lots of vegetables as your main portion of your meal. I know that isn't always easy, but eating more fruits and vegetables is never a bad thing. PCOS is a condition that can be tolerated, if you change your lifestyle and remember to exercise as it will use up more sugar in your system, and lower your insulin resistance naturally without the use of drugs.

My niece has all the symptoms of PCOS. We thought she just might have a hormonal disorder. The blood test come back tomorrow. I'm so scared for her! She's only 19. She's gained a lot of weight over the last few months, although she's not overeating, and she's got acne, which she's never had before and some of the other symptoms. How treatable is this disease?

Hi writer, I was diagnosed with PCOS at the age of 14. Its treatable as long as the person that has PCOS knows the condition, what it means, and what things can be done to alleviate the symptoms. As mentioned, low carb (not no carb), will help with the weight gain, exercising helps reduce the amount of glucose in your body (Most people with PCOS are insulin resistant (very similar to diabetes without being diabetic - but can get diabetes later in life). They do have "drugs" on the market that can help with acheieving pregnancy, and that will be up to her if she chooses to use them. I personally don't like using drugs of any kind as it forces your body to produce unnaturually. So, I choose to treat my PCOS with exercise, low glycemic/low carb diet to ward off diabets in the future and keeping myself informed of the latest and greates research out there on the disease. Good luck, its not a death sentence, its a very "liveable" disease, just have to do things a little bit differently then the average woman.

I have PCOS, too.
I had trouble getting pregnant with both of my kids. Amazingly, once my doc diagnosed the PCOS and put me on something to regulate my blood sugar (Avandia? it's been a while- I just had DS last month!) that somehow regulated my cycles, and I got pregnant in a matter of a few months.

Pcos
I am so glad I found this link. My younger sister who will be 16 the end of august was diagnosed when she was 13 I believe with pcos but her personality will not allow us to take her to the dr she gets all freaked out and acts like a huge jerk. But she has been and they put her on meds like metformin and thyroid meds and birth control pills also. She refuses to take the meds no matter how much we bribe her and at almost 16 she has had one menstral cycle but doesnt understand that if she takes these meds she will feel better possibly loose weight cause she has gained alot of weight in the past 3 to 4 years and she will be happy and have tons more energy. How do you get a STUBBURN TEENAGER TO UNDERSTAND adults know best and if she gives the meds a shot she will see a difference please my mom is at the end of her string trying to figure out how to help her since she wont help herself any recomendations would be great other than sitting on her forcing her to take these meds

It sounds like you know the basics, but I went ahead and did a post for you. Maybe it might help someone still looking for answers.

I have pcos also. I was diagnosed in nov 2006. I have a larposcopy scheduled for feb 23,2007 to view the inside of my tubes. I had a HSG back in nov also which they found out my right tube was blocked. Im currently not on any medications for some unknown reason. My doctor wants to wait till after the surgery to put me on meds.
