Default Ds decided not to brush his teeth any more

Help. We were doing great with ds and his teeth brushing. He's 2,5, has a brother of 4 months and did pretty fine with all the changes he had to accept. But since yesterday he doesn't want to brush any more.
I tried another toothpaste for children with fruity taste but he only licks on it and spits it out. I didn't let him have his favourite drink: chocolate milk, and kept telling him, that he needs to brush first. Same with ice-cream, sweets, chocolate. But he seems to just accept this fact. In the beginning he was crying because he also wanted ice-cream, but now he seems to be fine with it.
Granny says he still brushes with her. He never did with dh, so there is no way finding out if I did something wrong or if he just entered a new phase in his development.

So, please let me know what you think and how I might get him back to brushing. I never yelled at him or so for not brushing. Just kept telling him how good he was doing with his brush. We had to brush his car's teeth, too, sometimes, but then he brushed or let me do it for him.
Any suggestions?
