Default ear infection?

I should be the pro at ear infections because Jaecy had them a lot when she was in infant (esp in the summer with being in the pool everyday)

For the past week or 2, Kaydee has had a bad bad cough when shes sleeping, or going to sleep. She doesnt neccessarily have to be laying flat either. She coughs in her swing, in her crib, in her chair, anywhere she is asleep. She had a runny nose for about a week, but now that seemed to clear up. We blamed it on teething, although you still cant see or feel anything in her gums. I started to think she had allergies.

Last night she woke up quite a few times screaming bloody murder! She was coughing so bad she could barely catch her breath. I also noticed she had a hold on her right hear and was rubbing it, rubbing her blankie on it, and grabbing at it. Its hard to tell with her because she ALWAYS grabs her ear as a comfort thing when shes tired.

She has no fever, but when I touch that ear she flinches so bad and starts whinning. I touch the other ear and shes fine. She has an ear infection, right? Im just not sure because with Jae's ears she ALWAYS had a fever to go along with it. Im calling the Dr in a few mins to bring her in this afternoon, but I was just curious what you guys think

I have 0 experience with ear infections, but by now you should've been able to get in touch with the Dr.

Any word, yet?

they said it prob is an ear infection, they can come on w/o fever. It may also just be water stuck in her ears from the pool/bath. We have an appt at 3:30 EST so i will keep everyone posted...shes been pretty happy this afternoon, just VERY sleepy...she also didnt sleep at all last night! (and i didnt either of course)

well we are back...

I was right, ear infection. Bad one at that, probably been there for awhile. I took her 3 weeks ago because I thought she had one. I saw the Dr. I dont really like and he said it "looked like the beginning of one" but didnt put her on anything. And then with no symptoms it could have shown up anytime btwn then and now.

Also found out she has SEVERE allergies, which I suspected because the second you walk outside or open a window her nose turns into a water fountain She got put on allergy medicine now that she gets 4x's a day (as needed...meaning if we are outside all day she gets it 4x's; if we stay in all day, she just needs it once) The ped also told me to keep chocolate, seafood, and anything w/ peanuts away from her. Apparently babies this little with this bad of allergies are allergic to pretty much everything.

They put her on pennicillin (sp?) and I was told to watch for ANY reactions from that as well....I knew this kid was gonna be allergic to the world

At her next appt in Aug she will get blood drawn for allergy tests...then at one she will be put on Singulair....fun

So glad to hear that she's now on medications and the road to recovery!

Little sweetie! You did the right thing by taking her to be seen today.

I hope your little one feels better soon--it just goes to prove that Mom does know her kids best

Did they do any sort of skin patch test for her allergies?

DH has horrible enviornmental allergies, and sure enough, DS's first spring (he was about 6 or 7 months) the poor little guy was MISERABLE. The Dr. actually referred us to an allergist who did a skin test to see what, if anything, he reacted to. Despite the watery eyes, runny nose, sneezing, etc he isn't technically "allergic" to anything--he just has "sensitivities" We go back every 6 months for a checkup with the allergist.

i guess after they do the blood tests that would be the next step...

I just realized how much medicine this kid will be getting for the next week...

prevacid 1x a day
penicillin 2xs a day for 1 week
whatever the name of the allergy meds is 4xs a day!!!

Does any1 think thats a lot?? I didnt want her to be put on anything until at least one...it scares me

Have they not suggested exposure treatment? It is where you are exposed to very large amounts of the allergen, in some cases it means an allergic reaction occurs so if it were hayfever, for the rest of the season allergy symptoms are very low, for others it has a permanent effect and the allergy does not occur again. It can be used for various things, light sensitive skin, hayfever, grass rash etc
