Default Ear Piercing?

I was thinking about getting my little girl's ears pierced.
I was wondering at what age people have gotten their kids ears pierced? And what was the good and bad about it?
I was thinking about taking her to get them done after her 2 month appointment.

i got izzy's done when she was 4 or 5 months. she was really good, had no idea what happened (i was worried she was going to cry like crazy!) they healed up in 2 weeks & have never given her a problem. i got mine done the same time and they took about 3 months to heal. i much rather get them done before they discover their ears & begin pulling on them (which she's now starting to do at 9 months). HTH

I have heard of mom's piercing a girls ears because they are tired of her getting called a boy, which I can understand her frustration. But I worked at the mall just across the hall from a jewelry store, and hearing those babies cry.... It just broke my heart. I know some babies don't cry when it happens, but there's no way of knowing if they will or not.

May I ask why you all decided to pierce your girl's ears so young?

The rule growing up in our house of 6 girls, was we had to be 12 yrs. old. So the baby thing is very different for me to understand.

i know here they have to be 3 months old

I got my oldest's done at 12 weeks exactly. Big problem was around 5/6 months old she realized they were there and started RIPPING them out. We wound up taking them out for awhile. Luckily they stayed open, and now at 2 she wears them all the time.

I jsut got my youngest's done at 6 months. So far we havent had any issues. She barely even cried. We will see what happens once she realizes they are there

my store is right across from a ear piercing place, but tbh, we rarely hear them (about 5 feet from our door to theirs). i got izzy's done mainly because my mom never got mine done & so i was so terrified of it growing up that i never got them done until i was 20. like i said in my other post, i'm very glad i did since it took 2 weeks for hers to heal vs 3 months for mine. the younger they are, they quicker they forget what happened. my neices got theirs done at the same time (a few months & 5 years), the 5 year old pouted all day while the younger one was all giggles. jmo -> i much rather have a 4 second cry than a cranky child all day.

Nevy's Dr.'s office does them and this is what they say on the website:

What To Expect:
Ear piercing is available to our patients. For infants, we suggest waiting until the child is at least 4 months of age. We use the Blomdahl Medical Piercing System, a sterile procedure using a state of the art medical plastic ear stud. We prefer this system because there is absolutely no nickel metal, therefore we don't see the metal allgergy that can develop even with 24k gold earrings. We suggest that the earring stay in place for six weeks to provide for full maturation of the piercing site.

I wont do Nevy's until she's old enough to take care of them (about 8 or older). I had a lot of problems with mine as a child (had mine at 3yr) my mom had to get them re-done 3 times b/c my body kept rejecting the piercing. I ended up with a metal allergy at 7yr and an infection. I still have the hole but now if I wear anything in them I get a huge bump/bubble (which hurts like H**L) by the hole. I guess its from my body trying to reject them again. I dont want Nevy to go through that which is why I would use the plastic ear stud. Also I feel like I am causing my child pain and they dont understand why. I would rather her ask for them and understand why there is pain then to hurt her as a baby. That is just my opinion right or wrong !

3 months, too. Didn't cry at all. They were healed in a few weeks and 0 issues.

I always thought I would wait till my child asked for them and make it a big mother - daughter event. She is now 8 and doesn't care if she ever gets them. She is terrified of the needle and pain. With my next girl, I will definitely get them done as a baby. After watching the kids grow up, I believe its true when they say babies have a much higher tolerance for pain. It probably depends on the child too.

I wanted to get Emma's done at around 4 months but DH said no way. He thought it was too young and wanted her to wait until she was 5 or 6 like DD#1 was when we got hers done. Then he started seeing lots and lots of babies with them done. Now he is bugging me to go get them done. MEN!
