Default eating certain foods and BFing

I am wondering if you eat a lot of a certain kind of food if it can lead to allergies in your child?? A friend of ours says the reason our 6 year old is allergic to peanut butter is because I ate a ton of it while BFing him. Is there any truth to this??

In my opinion I doubt it. Severe allergies get worse with each exposure and you may have just brought it out sooner but it was always there.

No. . .no truth to that. Although, now that you have a child who is allergic to pb, I wouldn't eat it while nursing the next one. But I don't believe that you cause your child's allergies while bfing. Just doesn't work that way.

Well, that is good to know. Kinda stinks about the PB, though - it's one of my fav. forms of protein (I hate meat!).

It really depends on whether or not you feel there is a connection between allergies and heredity. I've heard some docs say yes, and some say no. My take on it is that if there is (bc I don't think they really know for sure), then that's one you don't want to mess with and taking precautions is never a bad idea. But I tend to think with severe allergies that kids are predisposed to them. I know of babies who were sensitive to pb while mom ate it while bfing. The allergy was already present.
