Electric Wheelchairs
My elderly parents (83, 85) are here locally in an ast living apt complex
where 3 meals, light housekeeping is provided.
I am on-call 24/7* for them.
Mom had 3 weeks in the hospital,
followed by 3 weeks in the rehab center,
and has been home about 7 weeks.
It takes a day to recover for every day of hospitalization/rehab.
We have just passed that point.
Dad has a lightweight electric scooter. After Mom got released, we ended up getting one for them to rent so they both could make the 2 long hallways for 3 meals / day in the diningroom.
We have been working on Medicare to cover an electric scooter for both of them.
Only to discover that an electric w/c is easier to get reimbursement.
And that was like pulling teeth.
Had a specialist neuro/rehab consultation, wheelchair clinic consultation, lots and lots of paperwork. I had daily phone calls to the Scooter Store for both of them.
Finally, got the ok from Medicare/2nd insurance on Wednesday and by 3:45 PM, both Mom and Dad had a new electric w/c sitting in their apt.
Discovered that Mom has never played a video game. She has no concept of a joystick to 'drive.' The other electric scooter used 1 thumb for forwards, 1 thumb for backwards, and had handlebars like a bike. We spent 4* teaching her to use the joystick. She now turns on a dime!
Woo Hoo!
Praise the Lord!
