Emma Rose's Birth Story (long version)
I was at the Doc on Thursday afternoon and was 80% effaced and only 1 cm dilated. Doc said I could go any time or next week. Just to be sure, we scheduled a non-stress test for the day after she was due.
All day Friday I kinda felt yucky. I had a few contractions off and on but they weren't that painful not were they coming at any real timeable intervals. About 10pm I started to feel em pretty good but they were still almost 15 minutes apart (and from having 2 other kids I knew they were noting like they were gonna be). I told DH he might wanna go to be early cause I didn't think he was going to get a full nights sleep. I tried to sleep but every time I would drift off I would get another contraction.
Around 1pm they were getting really strong and closer to 7-8 minutes apart. I decided it was time to get up, shower (shave and purdey up everything ). I woke DH up and he got himself dressed. I went to the bathroom and was bleeding so I decided it was time to call the doctor.
I call my doctor only to find out that they belong to a group of doctors that alternate on weekends (no one told me this before) and some doc I never met before would be delivering my daughter This, of course, upset me because I am really comfortable with my doctor and he delivered my other 2 kids. So, this doctor's nurse (the doc was already at the hospital doing another delivery) having never spoke to me before tried to talk me into waiting it out at home a bit longer. Once I told her I had a 40 minute drive, 2 other kids to drop off to family and that my contractions were now 5 minutes apart she agreed to have me go to the hospital.
We arrived at the hospital around 2:45 and got into my room right around 3am. It was shift change for the nurses so I got to sit on my bed (not hooked up to the monitor) for another 1/2 hour. Finally the "nurse" (she was NOT nice at all) came in and checked me (I was 3cm), hooked me up to the fetal monitor and all the other did all the other stuff they check.
She told me I could not have any medication until I showed progress. After an hour and contractions being 2 minutes apart and lasting 40-45 seconds each I had not changed at all. I was devastated, in pain and realllllly uncomfortable. She checked with the doc who authorized a shot of morphine to help me relax and hopefully get the contractions to do their job. 1 hour later I was finally at 5 cm and I requested an epidural. The "nurse" reminded me that I had had morphine and that was a drug.
I don't think she liked the attitude and dirty look I gave her cause a few minutes later in came a new nurse. A very nice lady who was just so fantastic and sympathetic to my pain needs. She called the anesthesiologist and checked me again. Now I was 6-7cm. 30 minutes later in came the anesthesiologist and they had to check me again. Now I was 8-9cm, too late for the epidural and was told I could push if I felt the urge.
At this point my membranes were still in tact and I had not met this doctor that was going to be delivering my bubs. I told the nurse I had extreme pressure and they needed to break my water. She started to break down the table and told me I could start pushing. In comes the doc and continues to tell me to push. I continued to tell them to break my water. With both my other births once they broke my water it was only about ½ hour after that the babies were born. The doc finally listened and broke it mid push. Boy, did she get wet. 1 more push and out came Emma with such force that she bounced off of the doctor and back onto my belly. It was so wonderful to finally hold her
All in all the doctor was great. For only meeting me about 5 minutes before Emma was born she really was a good doctor. Her voice was very calming and she portrayed an excellent feeling of comfort.
Looking back to my previous birth experiences, yes this was much more painful. However, the next day I felt really good and I was up and moving and felt more like me again sooner than when I had the epidurals.
