it IS an automatic deduction. I don't trust it to work, because you literally don't know until you get your receipt printed out. So, I can my card and then my free or reduced price item and then I pay. Once I know I got my deal, I scan my card again and I start the rest of my order.

it is a once a month program. so, if you go the email with the 3 items, it will be those items until next month.

the savings are programmed into your store card, activated when the proper product scanned on your cards. But as snichols76 said have to check for the it, usually appeared on the receipt after the order had been processed and paid. For your sake, print out the page before going to the store, take it to the CS if you didn't see the discounts on your receipt.
