Exercise
I had a great conversation with an older gentleman a few weeks ago. He said that when he reached a retirement age he went around and interviewed a bunch of older men who were very healthy, and he asked each of them what their secret was. He said the common factor was that they all participated in some type of hard physical work or exercise. There are many diets that will help us, but the core seems to always come back to old fashioned exercise. What do you think? Am I giving exercise too much credit?

even the best new diets focus on exercise. the abs diet for instance is half food, half exercise. now the challenge is to consistent about doing the exercise! one of the interesting things i have learned recently is that it is better (for weight loss and muscle gains) to do short bursts of hard exercise in a concentrated time period rather than a long sustained workout.

Absolutely Necessary
I feel that exercise is mandatory. Everyone needs to get some type of activity. Now, the original reco was 30 minutes a day, but recently the health gurus have upped it to 60 minutes. Exercise has so many wonderful health benefits and it can be fun too. Especially if you find someone to exercise with, this is the best motivator. One thing to remember, however, is that if you are trying to lose weight exercise is not the sole factor. You must focus on your eating habits as well. I don't believe in fad diets, but I do believe in healthy eating and portion control. You can enjoy the foods you love as long as you do it in moderation and make sure you are eating lots of good stuff like fruits, veggies, and whole grains. Get out there and be active and you will see improvements in how you look, feel, and live.

Exercise
you are not giving exercise too much credit, you are giving exercise the right kind of credit
exercise is what makes a man fit no matter what his age is
Benefits of regular exercise
- Reduces your risk of heart disease, high blood pressure, osteoporosis, diabetes and obesity
- Keeps joints, tendons and ligaments flexible so it's easier to move around
- Reduces some of the effects of aging
- Contributes to your mental well-being and helps treat depression
- Helps relieve stress and anxiety
- Increases your energy and endurance
- Helps you sleep better
- Helps you maintain a normal weight by increasing your metabolism (the rate you burn calories)

Water & Exercise
When I have really been successful in the past, it has always been when I have done at least 45 minutes of consistant light exercise a day, (walking) AND had 8 full glasses of water a day. Even when I am eating a low enough amount of calories, and getting my walking in, I don't seem to really drop the pounds unless I am also drinking 8 glasses of water.

Nathan, I have just started an exercise routine, after many years of being pretty stagnant. My colleagues tell me this is absolutely the most important part of their good health. I have been pretty sick for the past year, with allergy symptons. I've tried lots of things that have not worked. I'm hoping some new vitamins, coupled with exercise will help. I'll keep you posted (please excuse the pun).
