Default Fabric Softener?

This may be a dump question, but is there a special fabric softener to use on baby clothes like with detergent or do you just not use any? It just seems like the clothes won't be soft without it, but they all have chemicals in them that we don't want on baby's skin. I looked last time I was shopping and didn't see any that you use just for baby clothes.

Not a bad question at all!! I've tried to find dreft sheets everywhere and no other brand I know of sells sheets or liquid! The dreft still makes the clothes soft even without the sheets but the sheets are VERY hard to find! I still cant find them!

**EDIT** I decided to go on the dreft site and they no longer make the sheets! That could explain why I cant find them lol! The site says that using dryer sheets or a liquid can ruin the stuff they put in baby clothes to make them fire resistant and they recommend that you only use detergent on all baby clothes!

I did a little investigating. When I have the blog posted, I'll make sure and link here.

I have always used Tide detergent and Downey fabric softener and never had a problem. Luckily, now they combined the 2 and it is 1 less step for me.

Default Vinegar

We use reg old white vinegar instead of fabric softener for our all our wash. Its a trick we picked up when we were washing cloth diapers. It is an option that has to be used in the washer. You can put in one of the fabric softener dispenser balls if you have a top loader or just a splash in the softener dispenser on a front loader. It comes out in the rinse, so clothes don't have a vinegar smell (unless you use waaaaayyyy too much).

A nice thing about vinegar is that it doesn't build up on cotton items that need absorbency l(towels, diapers) like fabric softener can. It's also cheap!

DS had very sensitive skin as a baby (looked like a lizard from his excema). The vinegar didn't cause any problems for him.

Woops--nevermind. I had posted links to my articles about Dreft but this is the wrong forum for that! Sleepy mama brain to blame. But if you're interested, go check out the baby blog!

I tried the vinegar in the rinse cycle last night to wash her bedding that just came(so cute!!!) and it worked great!!!! I found my solution, thanks everyone! The clothes were just as soft as if I used a softener and I don't get the chemicals

I was going to post on here earlier in the week and just forgot, I actually got a baby fabric softner in Babies R Us. That was the only place that sold it along with baby dryer sheets. Look next time you go. Glad you found a solution anyway.
