Default False positive

No, it's not an AFP question

I just got back from my Dr's appt. I am 14.5 weeks and found out that my bloodwork came back HIV+. The good news is they did further testing and it was all negative. The Dr. said it was a false positive and the same thing happened to his wife.

Part of what makes me feel better is I was a virgin when I got married and I've never had a transfusion. Also, nothing has changed in my life since my last healthy pregnancy 2 years ago .

How common are false positives with the HIV test?

I don't have your answer. I just wanted to say THANK GOODNESS! I would have had a heart attack then and there! I'm so thankful that it was false!

Thanks, ladies for the encouragement!

I've done a few google searches and apparently false positives in the initial screen aren't unheard of. The accuracy of the further testing (the test that came back negative) is accurate to .000001% so that makes me feel much better!!!!

Yes--I did about have a heart attack when my OB told me! He walked in and said my bloodwork came back and there was something we needed to discuss, but not to panic. Too late. My heart already stopped beating at that point. He told me about the positive, but then showed me all the negatives that came with the further testing.

Thankfully DH was with me. He's not concerned and is telling me not to be, either. DH has his EMT certification and his mom and sister are both nurses so he has a lot more medical knowledge than I do. It's still a bit freaky, though!

I'm just glad they did all the secondary screening before I knew about the initial result so I didn't TOTALLY freak out!!!

Wow, I am glad you got it all straightened out.
That is so scary!! At least they figured it out before you were there, and they didn't make you wait.
I'm glad you are ok!!

I agree with Oweirdo. What on earth was the point in telling you about the positive test at all when he knew further testing showed it was negative? You'd think he'd be smart enough not to want to upset or stress a pregnant lady! I can't even imagine what you felt when he said it was positive. That's awful.

It reminds me of a few months ago when my dentist told me I had herpes. I would've fainted if I had been standing. I was so caught off guard as I've only been with my husband in the last eight years. I've never once had a cold sore, ever. He explained that I had a tiny gray sore on my gums. I said "Oh, like a canker sore?" He said "Yes, that is what it is. Canker sores are herpes." I've gotten canker sores since I was a little kid so if it is "herpes" then I guess I got it as a little kid. He went on to say that 90% of people have the oral herpes virus and that it's no big deal. I did some research when I got home. Half the research I found said that canker sores ARE part of the oral herpes virus, the other half said they ARE NOT. The Mayo clinic site said it's NOT so I'm believing that, since I've never had cold sores, etc. I seriously think he just liked the shock value of telling me that. I've considered finding a new dentist since that appt. I felt it was cruel to say that to me. Why not just tell me that I have a canker sore, for Pete's sake! One of these days, he's going to tell the wrong person that and they're going to go home and cause serious harm to their spouse.

Anyway, PRAISE GOD for the negative HIV results!!!

thank god it was neg. did they do the additional testing right away? or did they have you do more BW? man, i wouldn't have even listened to everything else, i would've heard "hiv positive" and killed DH. (then claim temporary insanity)
