Default Fibromyalgia Recommendations

If you or someone you love is touched by fibromyalgia, could you recommend any books, support groups, websites, treatments, therapies, or other resources for others affected?

I'd love any information on this that anyone has - things that have worked for them to alleviate pain, etc. My mom has fibromyalgia and has followed the traditional route of drugs when necessary but I'd love to know what else she could do to possibly ease some of her discomfort.

The Mayo clinic has a good overview of the disease. When my friend first starting having symptoms, I found a lot of reassurance here. The url is: http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/fibromyalgia/DS00079

My mom also suffers from fibromyalgia and depending on where you live, the following website could be of help for finding a clinic to go to for help: http://www.fibroandfatigue.com/index.php. Consistent massage therapy has also been helping alleviate some of the pains that my mom has suffered from for years. She is tired of having to use medications that all end up leading to negative side effects--either right away or down the road. I have talked with a homeopathic doctor and my mom will start seeing him soon. Pilates is also known to provide help for this condition.

I have had Fibromyalgia for 13 years. I have made the rounds trying everything medically and natural therapy-wise. I tried acupuncture 2.5 years ago and it was $55 a session. Amazingly easy treatment and at the onset the Dr. indicated the treatment schedule of 21 visits before I would start feeling relief. If this had been my first attempt at feeling better I would have been discouraged, but I was desperate. She was right. Just after session 21 I started feeling better. Within one week I was having pretty normal days of no pain, stiffness and increased energy. Shortly after that, my husband's work slowed down and we weren't able to make up for the short-fall. With no insurance and the lowered income I could not afford more treatments assuming things would pick up later and I would be able to continue to maintain these good days. That didn't happen, I got worse over time and we're still in the same boat. However, because an unexpected death in the family, a generous family member offered to pay for new treatments for me. I went to a clinic with traditional and holistic therapies. After extensive blood work including hormone levels I started a prescription and herbal combination approach to get my cholesterol, sugar levels and hormone levels under control (they were horrible numbers). After 6 months my numbers improved dramatically but I felt no better. Some problems I no longer had like a skin fungus, psoriasis, swelling, urinary infections, and I slept better. The clinic gave me a prescription for acupuncture. This time the Acupuncturist said it would be 11 treatments for me to feel better. I just had my 8th treatment Thursday, Jan. 31. On Friday Feb. 1st I had my first good day. I have about half the pain and stiffness, I am able to be on my feet for longer periods of time. That has continued every day without let-up and this is the 8th day. I am not feeling normal by any means, but this is the first time I have had so much sustained improvement and I still have 3 more sessions to go. I plan to continue treatments at least 2 times per month after this treatment program is completed to sustain. One other thing that has improved dramatically is the mental fog. I was so disoriented so much of the time and found it hard to concentrate. I am doing much better now and at 60 don't know how much that will improve to what I should consider normal. I am just so thankful that I found something that has made such a nice difference. Life feels like living not just enduring. I think my next challenge is to strengthen my muscles because I have become so weak after all these years of inactivity. I have been using Weight Watcher's points plan, but I don't go to meetings. I got the kit from E-bay and since October I have lost 20 lbs. The clinic informed me that the 100 extra lbs. I had gained since becoming ill would not come off until my hormone levels were corrected. My hormone levels tested close to normal after 6 months of herbal and prescription therapy and it was about that time that I started losing the weight. I hope this gives someone hope and encouragement and the desire to keep looking for answers to give you a better life. I don't expect this to completely clear up, but my hope is that I will be able to manage my health so I can be more productive and so that my family will find it easier to be around me. Of course, most of all, I just want to feel okay even if it is just once in a while, just to have a break.
