Question First Pregnancy

Good Afternoon Ladies. I need some advice. I could ask my mom or dh mom, but we haven't told them yet that we are expecting. I have been trying to lose weight and have been walking everyday up to 5 miles, using in home walking dvds. Some use weights (2lbs), one uses a stretchie band. I guess what I'm asking is it ok to still do all of these dvds while pregnant? I don't want to do anything to harm our little bean, and I want to make sure the bean sticks.
Thanks for your thoughts.

My advice is ask your Dr. Every women is different and only your Dr. can tell you what is ok for you to do. I know I was told to limit my walking to a mile a day. I was also told that extreme stretching is not good unless it is designed for pregnant women. The joints and muscles in your body become more unstable in pregnancy because of hormones getting your body ready for delivery because of this it is a lot easier to harm yourself during pregnancy (like pull a muscle or stretch to far). You also dont want to over work yourself. If you feel tired than stop immediately. Don't push yourself to finish. Your heart rate should also stay under a certain rate (once again ask your Dr. what the rate is b/c every women is different. I was told under 120 but I am sure most women get different numbers). Either way just remember to drink lots of water and not push yourself to hard! Good luck!

Congrats on your bean!

Jennifer shares some very good pearls of wisdom when it comes to a pg mom exercising.
If it hurts, stop.
Gotta protect your baby and your body.

Talk with your doc about this at your next appointment too.

My doctor said that as long as I am still able to hold a conversation while working out (ie- I'm not getting out of breath), I stay hydrated, and stop if I feel any pain/discomfort, I would be fine. He said I could pretty much do what I did pre-pregnancy, with the exception of some weight exercises and anything that involved me being on my back for a prolonged period of time.

Walking is fairly low-impact, and I was actually encouraged to keep doing so while pregnant (at the gym/outside I will walk up to 5-8 kms at a time). I would definitely say speak with your doctor- but generally your body will tell you if you are overdoing it. Gaining too much weight is a real concern to me (my wedding is less than a year after the baby is born, and I was previously heavy and lost a lot of weight)- and there has only been one time where my body went "woah, slow down". Don't go running any marathons, but some low impact cardio is likely fine

Congratulations!!!
I still do 40 minutes of aerobic training every day and lift weights. So long as you stay away from high-impact (jumping) stuff you'll be doing yourself and your bean a favor by staying in shape.
Trying to lose weight is something you'll have to forget about for the next year though
