Food Storage
I'm just curious how many people have a year's supply of food storage? If so where do you keep it? How important do you think food storage is?

My husband and I don't have it yet, but we are constantly working on it every paycheck. Storing it is a problem. We don't have a lot of room in our garage, so right now, it is just in our house. I know people who store it under their beds. I just think that if room is an issue, you have to be creative. It is very important, I, for one, am not going to let my children go hungry if something were to happen.

Storing it in your garage is not a good idea, because the temperatures vary too greatly and it causes the food to go bad more quickly, unless your garage is insulated. I keep wheat under mine and my son's beds. Since wheat is what you need the most of, and my pantry is full of other food items.

We don't have a years supply. My partner and I have been inactive for such a long time and only recently started going back to church about a month ago. We're struggling just to get the 72 hour pack ready

Ok, this is pretty ignorant of me...
Why do you need a year supply of food storage? I assume it has to do with the LDS church?

1 Year's Supply of Food Storage
The church has, for many decades, encouraged Latter-day Saints to have a 1 to 2 year supply of food. (It used to be 2 years, now it's 1 year.) The reasons for this are simply to be prepared for emergencies.
On the East Coast every year they have ice storms and are without power, water, or heat. If they had food storage, they would be able to survive this time without anyone dying (barring natural death or crime induced death.)
My husband and I went through an extremely tough time a few years ago - both of us out of work, he was diagnosed with kidney failure, etc. We actually lived on our food storage, with small supplementation from the store and our garden and were able to make it through. There have been a couple of other times where we've dipped into it as well for different reasons.
So really, it's a matter of being prepared for what the future holds - and as we all know - no one can 100% accurately predict what the future holds.

Reason: Fix paragraphs - you have to double enter to get them to do it regularly.

Wheat, wheat is the best. But you have to have a wheat grinder first, so you have a way to make flour from it, but wheat lasts for 20-30 years, and can be used as a staple for life. Here is a link to the LDS website on all of the questions (how, why, how much, what) on food storage if you are interested. http://www.providentliving.org/chann...1706-1,00.html
I know another reason for food storage is to help out others. My friends family lives in Baton Rouge and when Hurricane Katrina hit, they had several people come and stay with them, as did many others. The grocery stores didn't have enough food because of the Hurricane and they wouldn't of had enough food to feed everyone if they didn't have at least some food storage. It is just a good idea to have.

I completely understand. Just remember that the church has said to not run out and buy everything all at once, just make an honest effort, and do what you can do every month and you'll be okay.
