Default For moms with at least 1 child already

Ok . . . this may be a silly question, but I was thinking about it last night . . .

Do you take your older child(ren) to your OB appts when pg with #2 (or others)? Here's my dilemma--DH went with me to every appt when I was pg with DS. I know he'd like to do the same during this next pregnancy. What do I do with DS (currently 16 months?)

My mom lives about 35 miles away and works full-time so it's not practical for her to watch DS for every appt (esp. at the end when I'm going more frequently). There aren't any other moms in my neighborhood I can leave DS with and all my "mom friends" are from church--about 25 miles away!

Because I'm a SAHM I can't just go to my Dr. appts during lunch, before work, or after work while DS is at daycare.

I got a post-card in the mail just before Christmas that it's time for my checkup, but I'm putting it off because my Dr. does the well woman exam every 6 months, not just once a year so I just had one in June. Also, since this is our first month of TTC I'm going to wait and see if I get my BFP before scheduling my appt. Usually DH just watches DS when I've got appts, but obviously if I want him with me (esp. for ultrasounds) then that's where I've got my dilemma!

my DD came to every one of my appts...even the "exam" ones...and half the time she didnt pay attention (shes 2 now, was 15 months when i got preg) because we brought toys and books and such for her.

She insisted as she got older to come "hear Kaydee"...actually became obsessed with going to "the mommy doctor" so she could hear her sisters heartbeat

Yes, I took my 5 year old with me. Had to. He was there for the ultrasound when we discovered that the baby had a blocked ureter and was not urinating properly. That was fun. The tech was very good about it. But it is a fact of life, and I think many doctors offices, while they do not want to be babysitters, they would rather see you than have you put the visits off.

My DS was came with me to every apt when I was pregnant with my DD. They are very close in age so he was just a baby but I would just bring him in his stroller. I didn't have any other choice. I think most Dr offices are used to siblings having to come along.

Thanks ladies!!!! I was thinking I'd have to bring him along, but didn't know if that was "common" practice!

for most of the appts i went alone i tried to get them when the kids we're in school or daycare, but we did take our oldest ds to a u/s. I think it's all a matter of how you feel about it....

I think it depends on howwell-behaved your child is in those situations. I have a very high-maintence toddler and wouldn't bring him - I'd be chasinghim down the halls in one of those spiffy johnys!
Have you looked into a local MOMS club?? They are a wealth of help when you are pregnant, and even after birth.

I never took em to my yearly regular OB appointment because I felt that was my time to concentrate on me & my body. Discuss my concerns or whatnot with my doctor without the glaring eyes of the kids.

When I got PG with # 3 , that changed things a bit. Over the summer they came to my appointemnts with me. Fortunately, the non-belly check appointemnts fell when they were in school. I only took them out of school for the "big ultrasound"!

Keep in mind, mine are older though, 10 & 12

I took mine with me to all my appointments cause the majority of them were during summer break (which was an adventure- I sooo don't recommend taking more than one at atime, lol) I took Devin with me alot when I was pregnant with DOminic. It made it easier for him to adapt to the idea about "the baby in mommy's tummy" cause he got to actually see it.

I took my kids with me at each appointment. When I knew that I would have a legs in the stirrups exam, I would make the appointment for the evening or lunchtime so DH could watch the kids. He could meet me at the OB office and wait in the waiting room with them.
