Default Gestational Diabetes Screening Tests

I have a few quick questions about your experience with the Gestational Diabetes screening. I went in yesterday for the one hour test. When I called the testing center, I got three different answers about how long I should fast for. One person said one hour. One person said 10 hours and one person said two hours. I finally called my OB who said that it wasn't necessary to fast at all. I had my lunch about 1.5 hours before the test. When I arrived, the guy yelled at me that I should have fasted for two hours. I explained to him how I had gotten three different answers and that I was following my OB's instructions. He told me that I was probably going to fail. My OB's office called me today to say that I tested 142. The top of the range is 140 so I was over by two measly points! I asked if this could have anything to do with the fact that I hadn't fasted. The thought of having to fast for 10 hours and go in for a three hour test is making me stressed! The one hour test was bad enough. Idon't have very much patience or a very long attention span these days. The three hour test sounds like TORTURE!!!

My questions are:

1.) Has anyone had a "false positive" with the first test (meaning you tested high, were made to go take the three hour but passed the three hour test)?

2.) If you do have confirmed gestational diabetes, what was your score on the one hour test? My OB said some people test in the 180's. I'm only 142!

3.) What were you told about fasting for the one hour test? How long did you fast for?

4.) Do you think the fact that I didn't fast for two hours or longer made me test high and that if I did fast again, that I may pass the one hour test?

I begged my OB's office to let me try the one hour again. I said I'll fast this time. They said it was OK for me to try the one hour test again. I am wondering if it is worth even trying. Or if I should just go do the three hour. If someone here said they had a false positive with the first test, then I'd probably try the one hour again with more fasting time. Please answer if you can! THANK YOU!!!

I only have a second to answer you, but here's what just happened with me.

I failed the one hour test with this pregnancy--with a 145. (I had no problems with my first pg) I had to do the 3 hour after that. It wasn't a wonderful experience because I had my nearly 2 yo with me and nobody to help me with him so for 3 hours it was me and the little guy in the waiting room of the OB's office.

If you have more questions feel free to PM me--the little guy needs dinner right now!

My cousin failed the first then passed the second. I fasted for 12 hours with my first...That's how long my doctor wanted me to..i was starving. I did the 3 hour test while not pregnant...it was so boring. So if you do the 3 hour bring entertainment!!!

LJinAZ, had you fasted at all before the one hour test? Also, how did you do on the 3 hour test? Did you pass?

KR, do you happen to know what your cousin's score was with the first test and if she fasted before doing it?

I think I am going to ask to retake the one hour test. This time I will make sure to fast for at least 8-10 hours beforehand.

Thanks, ladies, for taking the time to respond!

No, I didn't fast before the one hour test (I asked and they told me I didn't need to). I'm convinced that's part of why I failed---I ate a corn muffin on my way to the Dr's office.

I did pass the 3 hour.

It is actually pretty common to fail the 1 hour and pass the 3 hour. I only failed the one hour with my twins but they thought that maybe it was bc it was twins. But I know a lady who has had 5 pg, and 5 times failed her one hour test. I guess the 3 hour test is more accurate.

I've been told to fast and I've also been told not to fast with the one hour. The 3 hour should be a non-fasting test although you can't eat tons of sugar for breakfast or anything.

142 is considered within the normal range of some OB's. I've had one OB say--no big deal. . .and I've heard of others saying that you should never be above 140. Ever. I don't really know what the deal with that is? HTH

Strange.....I know my SIL failed by like a point or two, and they just didn't worry about it.
I passed the first try, but I went in first thing in the morning, so I had fasted allllllll night!!! My appointment was at 9.
Good luck to you! I bet it was from eating.....what had you had for lunch?

For my one hour test I had to fast overnight. I couldn't eat after 10pm and my appt was at like 8-9am the next morning. Same with the 3 hr test. No food at ALL! I was also told to eat high sugar foods the week before my test to get my body use to the sugar overload the test would give me. When I failed my 1 hr I was at like 160-170 around there. The 3hr really isnt bad. I just brought a book and read or I went shopping(my Dr.'s office was downtown right by all the stores ). See my office also does a fasting level. So I had a fasting (which was always normal) and then a 1hr or the fasting and the 1,2 & 3 hr draws. I would fast before the test. It is more accurate. I would also ask for a retest of the 1hr before doing the 3hr. If you fail it again then you HAVE to do a 3hr test but most people pass the 3hr. My GD was diet control and Nevy was a perfect weight (5lbs 10oz @ 35 weeks 5days). So even if you do have it I promise its not that bad!

I had a lettuce salad with tomato, shredded cheddar cheese and some ranch. Also, three Taquitos (sp?) which are flour tortillas with steak and cheese inside. I also had a diet Mt. Dew. I knew to stay away from sugary items but my friend said that carbs (the flour tortillas) are just as bad as sugar for that kind of test.

My testing center said that I would not be able to leave and go run errands for the 3 hours test. I asked my nurse friend why she thought that was and she said probably because after fasting and drinking that stuff, some pregnant women get sick and/or pass out and they don't want you out driving around if that's to happen.

I will definitely take the one hour again with strict fasting beforehand.

Thanks, ladies, for all your help!!!

I was never advised in taking the short one. we alwaxys went through the long one. I had to fast during night and was called in at 8a.m. so it was nearly ok. I have to go again with this pregnancy. I hate the long test though.
